When I was itching to buy a street bike at age 16, the next door neighbor's son who was 20 crashed his Harley. No helmet. He spent months in the hospital and rehab and eventually was able to handle a wheel chair. He'd park on the sidewalk and when we came home he'd try to say hello but his speech was so messed up he sounded like a racoon on drugs. It was a powerful reminder of what can go wrong.
Before I even got a motorcycle I bought the best helmet money could buy in the '70s, (a Bell Star, what the racers used). It took me a few years to buy kit other than gloves and helmet, but if I crashed my head was going to be as well protected as the era's technology allowed. After watching another rider pass me and crash into a big log on the side of the road 15 years ago, I started wearing a back protector under my suit.
When I travel to a non helmet law state I'm always surprised at the number of riders without a helmet.
