Wear the stupid helmet !!!!

When I was itching to buy a street bike at age 16, the next door neighbor's son who was 20 crashed his Harley. No helmet. He spent months in the hospital and rehab and eventually was able to handle a wheel chair. He'd park on the sidewalk and when we came home he'd try to say hello but his speech was so messed up he sounded like a racoon on drugs. It was a powerful reminder of what can go wrong.

Before I even got a motorcycle I bought the best helmet money could buy in the '70s, (a Bell Star, what the racers used). It took me a few years to buy kit other than gloves and helmet, but if I crashed my head was going to be as well protected as the era's technology allowed. After watching another rider pass me and crash into a big log on the side of the road 15 years ago, I started wearing a back protector under my suit.

When I travel to a non helmet law state I'm always surprised at the number of riders without a helmet.

Hey - easy there guys. I've ridden motorcycles for over 60 years. Always worn a helmet - hate eating bugs. Just recently gave my son my Harley Low Rider. Now I ride a 2018 BMW R1200GSA. I can now hear the wind, the meadow larks and everything else. Eighteen years of the turn out exhaust on the Low Rider was just more than enough. I'm not too old at 76.

To me, riding a bike is like flying a plane; some people can do it safely, then there are the rest of us. I never had anything very big, but my old CB450 Honda would top 120 w/o even trying. I sold my last bike- a little Yamaha 400XJ Maxim, after somebody tried to "share lanes" with me, and I had to push off his door just to keep from getting run over. The worst part is that they will cut you off, then laugh about it.

Does Calif. have a helmet law now? ISTR back in the 60s & 70s they were one of the few states that didn't.

My next post I start is going to be on "Elder Law". Hope it doesn't get as controversial as this one. I have started and erased the post three or four times already. We have been to a local lawyer and thought we had everything arranged perfectly. The lady in that meeting Wednesday blew all that out of the water. A lot of the stuff she told us pertained to Kentucky law only. A lot of it had to do with Medicare and Federal law. A lot of the stuff she talked about could be done with minimal input from a lawyer BUT, according to her, needed to be done with lawyers familiar with the laws.

Soon as I can get my thoughts and notes arranged I will start it off. Hopefully some time this weekend.

RSKY, your point is noted but more people know motorcycle crashes more than elderly relatives with dimentia. I know both but it’s true that motorcycles are perceived as dangerous, killing and injuring many younger folks. Sorry about your troubles.

There also is some evidence that a contributing cause of dementia may be a head injury earlier in life.

If people would put their **** cell phones down motorcycle riding would be a whole lot safer.

Here is one that will never fly. If you at fault in an accident, and someone gets hurt, you lose your license. Treat it like a dui.
