Ok, jumped off the fence. Just ordered the Tempest station and the Bird Deterrent. Tracking says to expect next Mon.

Paul, I’m gonna borrow your idea and co mount with my Davis VP2 to start.

My Tempest came in today. Setup was super easy and took about 5 minutes as advertised.

Deciding on a location and installing it took a lot longer. I bought the ez mounting kit with it, but really didn't need it.
I used a 4' length of 1" schedule 80 that I had in the shop to get it a little higher. It's on an 8' landscape timber that is about 2' in the ground. The "hub" is about 100' from the sensor in my office.

It's been running for about an hour and seems to be working properly.

Good job. Also curious as to white circular thing.

Mine has shipped USPS, expected Mon.

Looked around and found the right 1 1/2 pvc fittings to make adapter to mount on my Davis pole. Just need to find a longer scrap of 1” for the top.

The white thing is a pipe. It goes under the driveway. I though that since I can't mow over the pipe anyway, why not put the post next to the pipe and trim around both at the same time, instead of having the post in another spot in the yard.

Went by my co-workers house yesterday that has the Tempest. Glad I did. He is not much on installing things. He just assumed it was working as it should and I judged the station by the data is was showing. Upon arrival, a closer visual inspection noted two things: First, the station was installed crooked. (He thought it looked straight when he installed) Second: It was kinda close to a tree. So I offered to move it and got the green light.

He picked an area more centered in the yard. Moved it and put a level on it. Right off the bat the temps and wind was responding like it should. The original location was shaded in the afternoon and tree limbs were most likely blocking some rain.

Overall I was impressed with the station. Impressed enough that when I got home I ordered one. And being the weather hobbyist that I am, I went ahead and ordered the install kit and bird deterrent also. Figured I will install on the backside of the post that has the CoCoRaSH rain gauge. This will give me a chance to personally check it out and compare quality and accuracy with them both. Plus, the dual setup will give me two different weather maps and apps. Just by looking over the Tempest website, looks like they offer more data. The lightning data being a biggie for me since I have four radio antennas outside that does not mix well with lightning.

I may later do a write-up and compare the offering and short comings of both the Davis and WeatherFlow. Until then, I will be waiting for the station to arrive on Monday.

Interesting Joe
Sounds like next week there will be at least 3 of us With colocated Davis - Tempest stations.

I just ordered the bird deterrent kit for my tempest. I did that based on the fact that they constantly fouled my Davis rain bucket. I added spike to the top of it, and later bought the Davis bucket after they followed my lead and added them.
With the Tempest above the Davis station, it would likely seem attractive to them if it’s unprotected.
I’m going to wait to install it out of curiosity to see how the birds react to it.
So far (less than a week) the Tempest and Davis correlate well, but I haven’t had any rain to compare yet.

Paul, how did you determine how far above the Davis?

I ordered the bird deterrent with mine. I have deterrent on my Davis so didn’t think twice. I often see birds on my fence close by.

I have had the Davis Vantage Pro 2 for about 16 years now. I have changed the super cap and the temp/humidity sensor. Everything else seems to be working fine. I have been looking for a system for my sister. Not wanting to spend the money for the Davis Pro I was looking at the Ambient system, hadn't heard of the Tempest systems, will need to check them out. Thanks for the suggestion.
