Weird frost proof yard hydrant problem.

I noticed you used a short section of galvanized for the last underground horizontal section -- good idea to prevent PVC breakage. When I did my own frost free hydrants, I added a couple street elbows at the 90 deg turn from horizontal to vertical. That way if you happen to back into it or hit it with the backhoe the hydrant can just move on the threads in any direction without breaking any pipe. Of course, if you're in one of the very cold states and the horizontal run is 4' deep, forget that...

Okay so here's the deal. I have one of those cheap import China Junk Pro plumber yard hydrants that's been in the ground nearly 2 years now.

Well today while running the sprinkler to water some grass, I started noticing water bubbling up around the hydrant. So I was thinking oh no. Not a leak. So I shut the hydrant off and the water goes back down. :confused2:

Then after the water goes down and the ground dries up. I turn the hydrant back on. Water starts bubbling up again.

Anyone have this problem occur? It has to be with the hydrant itself right? I mean if it were the pipes leaking the water would continue to bubble up out of the ground.

The water only starts bubbling up with the yard hydrant turned on. The ground dries out when the hydrant is turned off.

I'm thinking the darn plunger isn't sealing off the drain hole likes it's supposed to when it's on.

I hadn't dug it up yet to find the definite problem as I was gonna just replace the 2 pro plumber hydrants with woodfords or simmons hydrants next spring.

Howdy,
Frost Free Hydrant's are just that. Something that is installed, and you never have to go back down there again. 1" HDPE high pressure 210psi black line, all brass fittings with stainless steel clamps, with plenty of gravel for the hydrant piss out area. Iowa Woodford hydrant's is what you want.

Howdy. :)

Woodford is the one I'm probably gonna go for. There's 2 Woodfords in my parents yard, that's been in the ground at least 50 years.

Little rusty but not had a problem with them. Well one did have the drain hole plugged up with some roots. That wasn't letting it drain, I dug it up with my excavator this spring, and unplugged the hole. but other than the drain being plugged and some rust. They work great.

Though since we plan to replace the old Galvanized water line from my parents water meter to their house. Were gonna go ahead and replace the Woodfords with some new ones.

Once I saw that Galvanized pipe that was tied to the Woodford, I give it 2 more years max, before it starts leaking. lol

Let's just hope it holds off till then.

I'm hoping to replace mine with Woodfords, if I can afford it by then. But if not, it's definitely gonna be another brand that's made in USA. No More China Junk Hydrants for me. lol
