Went to Aldi'store a few day ago and a woman in her mid 30's aproached me with a bag and told me to fill it up and she would pay for it, I said no and she came to me a few minutes later and did the same thing, again I said no then she came to me for a third time and forced me to take a 20$ and a 5$ in cash. She said she was doing gods work. I have not shaved in a few months so I guess I looked like homeless person which I am not. She also said that she was a cop and thanked me for my service for being a disabled Navy vet.

It's all about the appearances. I had the neighbor call me when I was on vacation saying that someone had broken into my pickup truck and ransacked it. She said she called the police. Of course, it ruined my vacation as I rushed home about a day's drive. When I looked at my truck it was just as I left it. What I mean is that I don't keep a clean truck, it always looks like it's ransacked. The only difference was there was black fingerprint dust over everything. I'm guessing I should clean out my truck every once in a while. I didn't have the heart to tell the neighbor that everything was as I left it. Turns out I ruined my own vacation, serves me right.

A neighbor 2 doors down died suddenly, Police were called... then detectives since the house looked like it was ransacked. Next of kin shows up and informed the detectives, "No, it always look like this...."

When the Kin folk were cleaning out the place (throwing out everything). Neighbor across the street got a $1200 vacuum cleaner, I got a pretty new $700 kitchen sink... The next of Kin, who lived an hour away, got $350k out of the blue when they sold the house.

In my experience as a contractor, the people that dress the nicest, have the biggest houses and the newest cars are the ones who struggle to pay me for fixing their homes. I've gotten to the point where I try not to work for anybody in the "rich" neighborhoods. There is just too many issues getting paid by them. They ask me to wait until next week before depositing the check, or they want to mail the check to me when I give them the bill. But most of the time, they are the ones that try to lower my bid by asking me to charge less and they will make it up in other jobs in the future. They are also the only ones who ask me to use cheaper parts for their projects. Only time I ever used Walmart Paint on a house was in a high dollar, gated golf course community on a 5,000 square foot house.

Living poor makes a man rich.

I am also a contractor and have experienced the exact same thing. The folks who look like they have money are always the ones either saying they can afford it, or trying to negotiate you down, or complaining about your fees. The average looking people just ask when you can start.

My contractor, who's an old friend, will no longer work (or even bid a job) for rich people.

Of course, no problem working for me!!!! :ROFLMAO:

{Edit - he is semi-retired, so he can pick and choose what and when he works, my project is the last one until the fall, when it's cooler - he's 280# and 6'8", big dude... doesn't work well in heat!!!}

Just finished setting up pump jacks with him to finish off the back (high) side...

22 x 12 screen in porch, just shy of $40k... he does excellent work (just ask him... he'll tell you, not shy!!!). At least I know my money is going to a friend (makes it slightly easier to swallow, err, umm, write the checks...)🥴

My mother complains that I look homeless with my long scraggly beard and dress poor with holes in my clothing. It's by design. In this world, I'm not looking to stand out.

Other than driving a new jaguar or ocean. I've seen people look twice when I get out of the car, looking like I stole it.

My Dad explained the difference between having money and being wealthy. I might not have the fanciest house, drive the fanciest car or wear the fanciest clothes, but I don't worry about my next paycheck or any other bumps in life's roads.

BTW: My kids joke that I always look like I'm ready to go hunting. Almost all my clothes are some earth tone, khaki, olive drab or beige. You can clearly see the line of demarcation in our master bedroom closet, between my side and hers.:)

There's "dressing for others", "dressing to make an impression", etc.
NOT doing it can cause misunderstandings.
A lot of sales people think you should "wear your wealth". I prefer to be comfortable.
I think it was Bird who once wrote here that he would prefer to wear bib overalls all the time. I go with cargo pants all the time.
