Duno if it helped or not but we would weld then clean and even grind the weld down and lay another beed on top of that one and on big stuff there were sometimes a total of 4 beeds ran on the item
1st down the middle
gind and clean
2nd between surface and first weld on right side
clean and grind
3rd between surface and first weld on left side
clean and grind
4th back down the middle joining the left, right and center welds together.

I remember him telling me thats how they did pipe on oil field equipment

Correct, might call that stiching...I just weld, don't know all the terms and such.

What is an adequate sized mig for a guy doing stuff around a hobby farm, and around a CUT? Fixing the odd implement, welding a QA bracket on a bucket or a pallet fork - etc?

That's a tough question. I think the answer is a stick welder for 1/2" and above and a nice MIG for 3/8 and below. The problem with the MIGs is that they get really expensive once you cross the 250A mark.

This is my ideal machine as I seldom weld more than 1/4, and I will own it one day soon...

I know this is a MIG v stick discussion, but geez, no mention of good ol' oxy acetylene torches. I'm just a hack with these torches but shucks, I can weld up 1/2 inch no problem, and no concerns of duty cycle. Sure, there is a larger heat area but it all seems to have worked out well structurally.

I have a mig welder too and reach for it often for convenience, but feel more comfortable with the torches when I want to feel good about the weld. But I'm not much of a welder and much newer to the wire-feed (mig) approach. Even so, it seems easier to me to control depth of weld and get it done in one pass with the torches. But then maybe Iim just showing my ignorance about welding here...:)

The folks that market these things are to blame too. We live in an age of more marketing hype than ever! I'm waiting to see when they come out with a 10HP shop vac that is 18 volt cordless.......

Ken

You're be able to use the same battery on your 10HP air compressor...

:D

I have read this thread from the beginning. I started out welding in a small machine/welding shop. I worked construction welding pipe and structural iron. I worked for Westinghouse during the nuclear days. I was certified to weld on nuclear components. Last I worked in a ASME certified pressure vessel plant. I believe I know something about welding and some of the statements made really surprise me. Some of you people could sure impress me with your welding machines ability. Whew and I thought I use to be a hotdog welder.

I have both a Lincoln 110V wire-feed, running .035 flux-core on it, as well as the Lincoln AC/DC tombstone.

Will the 110V weld a full-penetration weld on 1/4 in a single pass? Nope. Will it weld a couple of 1/4 inch plates together, using multiple passes and/or weaving? Sure it will...won't pass for nuke quality welding, but it'll hold enough for most everything I need it for, and it's fast and easy to use. Great for outdoor jobs when I can run an extension cord or use a generator. I've had it 15 years and tripped the thermal limit only twice.

When I do need more power, then I grab the stick welder...and the DC sure makes it easier!!

IslandManMitch: Many of us are pretty new to welding and come here to seek the experience of those who have done this before us.

Why not add your 2 cents about what statements surprise you or that you disagree with. Much of this is about opinion - and yours matters as much as anyone elses. I would welcome it.

IslandManMitch:

I spent a little time around oilfield plant construction that made use of a welder or two.

Thats why I don't even think of getting a welder but take my stuff to a local shop that has reasonable rates.:D :D

Pictures can always tell the tale!:D :D

I'd sooner shoot myself then take one of my hay rings to a welding shop every time one of the horses kicked a panel loose. Not to mention all the other little stuff I can rapidly fix - turn that into a full day event and I wouldn't have any time left...

Would my welds pass x-ray tests? Probably not all of them, but they look good and they don't fail and that's pretty much what I need them to do...
