WELDING BLIND ?

I know if there's too much light behind me(welding facing down, sun behind me) I just guess at how well I'm welding. Sometimes I'll go a little crooked and have to try again. Like driving off the road.

Great that Mohammed focused these welding threads! Thanks!! Two items that helped me 1) an Auto-Dark helmet. (I like my HF-Chicago better than the son's SpeedGlas) and 2) I clipped a red 12"x12" shop rag to the back, with those black 'bull-dog' paper clips! Looks sorta like I joined the french foreign legion, but it keeps the 'backlighting' from wanting my irises to close, and I get a much better puddle-view! I use drug store readers 150-175 under the hood with no problem. ~Scotty

Something I'd like to add. When you weld don't wear glasses that darken in the sun cause when you strike an arc the lens go full dark. I was complaining about my hood till I figured out the true problem....

I have to check that out as I can't see the puddle well anymore either!!!!

Well........I run a few rods today with transition lens and they DID NOT darken, I was working indoors.

I can see it being an issue if working outside though.

That's a good one...should've seen that one coming...but, I guess I should state that she has 2...A PHD and a PhD...one is a Leinbach she uses for her horse pasture fencing (gets used a lot) and the other is in Psychology (retired, only used on me!).

Tip: If you're having trouble seeing your work, in addition to the suggestions above, you may try covering the back of your head and helmet to prevent light from coming in the back of your helmet. It reflects inside the helmet and makes it hard to see.

I often cover my helmet with a makeshift "hood" over the top and back of my head. I designed a snap-on leather hood cover for some buddies this past summer (they were doing lots of welding for work outside in the sun). Have to put one on my helmet, I guess.

Probably get back to putting the airflow/cooling system together for it, too.
