My question is, what made them crack to start with?

If you end up welding these parts, one trick that I have used in the past is to use a needle scaller to peen the welds after each pass or deposit. And I mean a heavy peen. This acts as mechanical stress relieving process. It will minimize distortion. Later.

I have had good luck with nickel rod, but as it has been stated above , u must be meticoulous in your procedure.
I have had 3 of these units they are notorious for this issue I have split all 3 tractors and have had the housings welded costing about 1000-1900 depenfding on how bad the welds were. All worked after and held up as good as the original factory garbage. You abosolutely have to find a welder with the knowledge and capabilities to weld cast iron, this process is a heating then welding heating then welding laborious painstaking process so that there are no bad sections of the weld. It can be done it is cheaper than a replacement housing and John Deere are crooks for putting out such a substandard product I know of at lease 50 of these tabs myself that have had the issue. They should at least pat for housing but they refuse as they slip under the guise that the loader bolts loosen on this machine and as part of preventative maintenance one should keep them tight just like greasing the machine before use. Unfortunately no-one tele you that when yo buy one nor anywhere else other than trial n error or finding out the hard way after the machine splits, you will probably have to check the input splint o the hydrostatic drive pump as when these crack it makes an uneven parallel in the tractor and th only part holding things together is the pump where it connect into the motor. this usually bends or breaks either way if you fix without addressing that issue you will have more problems later.
