There is one way to do it in place w/o disassembly. There are bronze alloy arc rods for this type repair. I have done it. Drain the oil well, leave the plug, and vent open if one,drill the crack ends as said above, V grove the crack, weld away with the 3/32 bronze arc rod. It lays down real nice. Practice on a piece of junk he;d in the same position first. No pre-heat required. I have even used the stuff for casting that are structural in nature.

Phos Bronze Electrode. It will also do a fine job. Kinda like brazing with a stick.

I have welded on tractor axles using a 7018 rod with excellent results. I dont think they are cast iron but are instead cast steel which welds quite well with low hydrogen rods without cracking and has excellent strength-more than the parent metal.

The problem is the oil, you have to get that out completely regardless of the weld metal used or it will cause lots of bug holes in the weld. Since the crack is on the bottom, heating it up will just cause the oil to migrate faster to the crack as soon as the heat is removed. If possible, remove the whole axle assembly so you can position the crack on the top. Heat it up to burn out the oil, then liberally wash it with acetone , then heat it again prior to welding to burn off any residue. There is no need to preheat before welding other than to try to get rid of the oil.
