Well pump keeps going out!! 4 in last 6 years!

Hey guys! WOW thanks for all the detailed posts!!! Here is what appears to have happened. When the well pump was kicking on it was banging against the side in several places and broke the wire about 5 feet above the pump. The wire was also skint up in several other places. After pulling the pump up I ran new wire and added those white plastic bumpers that the pipe goes through. I now have water!!!!

The well is 358 feet total. The pump hits the water at about 80 feet so I have well over 200 feet above the head. It is a 3 wire 10 guage system on a Myers 1hp pump.

Thank you all for the replies!

That sounds better - thanks for the update - you have a 2 wire motor it appears (no control box above ground).

Also good to put on the plastic spacers but better to install a torque arrestor (expandable rubber) above the pump a few feet then about 150' midway on the pipe. This prevents the twisting and wearing of the wire on the casing when the water level is low.

Also replace your pressure switch with a low pressure cutout type and as others have suggested check the charge (Storage) tank pressure and even add another tank to decrease the cycles of the pump. The switch should be set at 40 PSI and the charge tank pressure (tank empty 38PSI) or 2 PSI below the cutin on the switch.

Glad you have water again, but these measures should give you a water system that lasts 5-10 years before needing servicing.

Dang it, I thought that those plastic "no-spin" discs were SOP on any pump install.....I didn't even consider that

are you reusing the old wire?

do you run irrigation?

geting sand?

I had a well that had less flow than was needed, however at the time I could not afford to either drill or fracture the well. The solution I finally used was a load sensing switch on the pump. The switch would detect the drop in load when the well ran out of water and stopped the pump for a set period of time like a half an hour or so, I think it was adjustable, then cycle back on until the tank was full. Worked, and is still working, for fifteen years. It works great and never had to worry about running the pump dry.

Good setup. You should have no trouble for 20yrs. Too late now, but there are torque snubbers for the pipe that damp the quick twist that happens as the pump starts. Using these near the pump is good.
