How about solar pump and a storage tank? I just installed one recently. I use the Grundfos SQflex pump.

. I have tried just about all the filtering sytems made and they all seem to work for a few months and then peter out on me.

What do you mean by peter out?

scesnick, I finally remembered the name of a guy that only posts to water topics and has been very helpful in the past. You might want to PM GaryQWA.

An under ground water source[spring],is one thing,,a little surface run off another,,if it comes from a spring than yes you could use that water, if its surface runoff,I wouldn't even think of it,,,if its a spring, and its above your house,,you are lucky and set,,just need to make a cistern,,if its below your house, could still work, but you need of course pump which requires electricity.
I got iron in my well water too,,learned to live with it in the 15 years we been here,,whole house filter filters the water for about a month,,don't buy anything white,,use iron out tablets in toliet,,use a brita filter picher for drinking water,,,we got plenty of water, its just not the best,,,might try a deeper well one of these days,,but for now,,its better to have water than no water,,,thingy

Just curious ... are youall talking about real IRON in the water or iron-eating-bacteria ... which is usually the red/brown slimey stuff that collects on the botton of the toilet tank, clogs filters, turns my grimey t-shirts red/brown ... ?

Both,,mine actually has little iron particals in the water, thats why I use the filter,,,sure if I didn't put those iron out tablets in tolit tank there would be slime as well, used to have perfect water in another county I lived in,,but here its common,,noticed it more after a well was drilled a 1/4 mile up from me,,musta hit the same vein,,thingy

Ok, me too. Funny thing, it's only a prob in the summer here (100°+) and if I run enough water (single guy) it goes away or slows way down. I know, you've never heard of such a thing ... story of my life :)
I have one of those spin-down mesh filters at the tank house ... catches the bulk ... I threw away all my white shorts and bought black ... all seems good now :)

The main problem is laundry. All the whites are VERY hard to keep white and the wife is getting fed up with it. We use "Iron Out" and it seems to work well.

When I say " Peter OUt" i mean that the systems work well when they are new but after about 6 months or so they seem to slowly quit being effective. I have the kind that back washes itself and supposedly you never have to add more media. But, all 3 of the sytems I have had have done this.

I know what you mean, been putting up with it for 14 years now or so,,we don't buy anything white really anymores,no need,,that iron out powder is nasty stuff,,we just use an iron out tablet in tolit,,that helps there,,,talked to a water guy,,[salesman],,he didn't convince me that after spending 3,000 or so I would be happy,so never did buy any kind of treatment machine,,,would spend that money if something would work,,but from everybody I've talked to they end up like you say yours is working.
Other than drilling another well,,don't think there is much we can do. We have plenty of water though,,and just put a new pump in after over 14 years,so,,,could be worse,,,tell your wife that you are tired of it too,and she should save her money and get another well drilled,,thats what I told mine,,,course the honeymoon was over,,lets see,,oh thats right,we never had one,,,,,thingy

Thingy,

The thing is, My creek water originates on my property out of tiny little underground springs, ( not just one large one) and that water is clear as a bell. The town below my property used it up until last year. All they did was clorinate it and it was fine. I think I have my mind set on building a scaled down version of their resevoir and clorinating itmyself and running it through a UV filter and then my whole house filter that I already have.
My problem is how do I go about doing this? My house is up on the hill and obviously the creek is lower than my house. I own my own backhoe so burying the line would not cost much. I just don't know how to go about the rest of it as far as what pump to use, where to place the pump ( in my basement or down by the dam) How to build the dam to suit my needs..... these are all questions I have been looking for answers to...
