West Coast Smoke, UGH!

Sorry about that... normally I don't care for acronyms but PSPS is one CA residents can't get away from.

Business in many areas just reopening post weeks of fire and now power being shutoff.

Locals in Sonoma, Napa, etc... said they just restocked...

All I can say is more business for Generac.

Last year the power was out for extended periods...my 25 year old Honda EM 5000 kept 3 single family homes with power to 9 pm each night.

Weather bureau predicted strong winds here, yesterday. It never happened. Thank goodness we don't have PSPS around here. At 3:30AM it's 30F here and going down, until well after sunrise. No rain - no smoke either.

They shut us off at 8pm. We got some pretty strong winds last night- the deck furniture was getting blown around until I moved it out of the wind. We're running on our 23 year old EM5000 now. Yay Honda!

PG&E started doing PSPSes after a fire in Napa that killed a bunch of people and burned a lot of houses, caused by wires that blew down in strong east winds. They didn't declare one the day of the Camp fire in Paradise that killed 87. That was caused by the failure of a 100 year old tower that dropped a high tension line on the ground during high winds at the end of fire season when everything was dry. The line hanger that failed wore through an inch thick hook. PG&E doesn't even have maintenance records saying they have ever inspected it, but it was patched at least once.

California's utilities are overseen by the state PUC. Who pretty much do what PG&E wants. It's been that way for decades, through all administrations. Regulatory capture works equally well in a Republican administration as a Democratic one. Money spent on maintenance and record keeping takes away from the bottom line and reduces executive bonuses. So PG&E follows a "run until failure" model. That has caused a lot of fires and killed a bunch of people. After the Napa fires, rather than catch up on the maintenance, they cajoled the PUC into letting them just cut power when it's windy in fire season.

If the outage is more than 2 days they'll pay us $25/day. Which doesn't even cover the cost of fuel for a small generator running part time. And strangely enough, our outages often end just before they'd have to start paying us.

When PG&E was in bankruptcy early this year I was hoping the state would take them over. I have little hope of fixing the PUC but getting rid of the profit motive would have helped. But no, the government caved and backed PG&E with public money to help them cover their losses from fire related lawsuits.

We did have strong winds yesterday and lost power for a bit. In fact, my BIL lost his patio umbrella.

Lucky it didn't go through a window. We have several of those on our deck by the pool in the summer and every once in a while, we'll loose one into the back yard or the pool. We've pinned most of them in to the holders, but sometimes forget to put the pins in. :confused3:

Yeah it took awhile for him to find it. That is the front side of his house and it came from the back.

I lived on the west coast for years and drove up and down Cali 25 times, at least. Never in real danger but always winter fires. I feel for you folks for a number of reasons. It痴 still raining here every other day, on average. I wish I could send this rain your way! Been pouring here for hours! More floods!

The comment about the state taking over the elec co just threw me for a loop. First of all, the elec co is a virtual govt agency. I知 gonna say it again, tell me 1 thing the govt does well. 25 years and still waiting for 1 example. The idea that some govt agency can do a better job is, no offense, disingenuous. We know better!

3 quick examples but first, understand that govt has at least 2-3 people to do the job of 1 private sector employee and in most cases, they make more money. 13 agencies to monitor for clean water. 13? I知 not saying they don稚 work hard, I知 saying what they do is not done well and it is mostly counter productive. I do not blame govt employees for the system. I do blame them for taking advantage and perpetuating it! And now they are a powerful voting block, Just think of the teachers union and the current state of American govt education. Etc etc

1. Some state office demanded I send them my tax returns. They threatened to take my ag exemption away! I went to NC dept of rev web site trying to get a copy of my returns. After 30 minutes of jacking around I finally found a private sector co that would cut thru the red tape etc, and provide a copy for $99 or something. I had no choice.

Here痴 the capper. After I finally printed the 110 pages, the original demand was rescinded, mistake on their end. In the real world, someone loses their job!

2. Recently tried to get personalized license,

KNEWNRML

If you click on the DMV web site the first thing it does is send you to a 3rd party private sector co that will do the dirty work of navigating the DMV web site for you. Are you kidding? Again, top heavy overweight govt agency who can稚 even do their own jobs!

3. I Tried to change address at post office web site. Because I traveled all the time and moved a lot, I was very familiar with the post office change of address site and, imho, it worked pretty good. Searched, clicked on what I thought was the USPS site, it looked identical to the old site. After going thru the motions they always ask for your credit card to verify your identity. Always a nominal charge like 50 cents or something. I click and pow, I知 billed for $40 by again, some private sector 3rd party Co. It痴 been 4 months and
I知 still fighting that one. They will rot in **** before I ever pay that bill. The end result of that dispute will be a shot to my credit rating and the associated raises in your insurance rates etc. yup! They got it sewed up!

So the govt has way way way too many employees. So many that they have to farm out the real work. I will bet everything I own the govt gets a piece of the action!

Again, I do not want to offend any one but the idea that the govt can run the electric co is Polly Anna.

It comes down to people doing their jobs. Most people are gonna cruise if there isn稚 any real competition or downsides and govt employment is the safest place for those folks.

It痴 just human nature and we are doomed by it!

Have a nice day
