The guy who contracts my apple orchard - sends in his pruning crew, tills, harvests - brought in the first load of turkey manure today. I asked why a month early. He replied his entire grape crop is lost to smoke so it won't be harvested. He sells exclusively to a vintner who charges around $100/bottle, sold by subscription lists and in high-end restaurants only.
He operates a couple more traditional apple orchards like mine, plus the vineyard on his home parcel. He said the apple harvest this year was normal overall, a little better than average on my place and a little below average to nothing, at his other places. The apples balance his losses on the grape side. Not a profitable year but not financial ruin.
He has a total loss for the cost of the extensive pruning labor, spray, tilling etc in his home vineyard and the the other vineyards he operates.
He crushed a couple of samples in 5 gallon buckets and couldn't find another vintner who wanted his crop. Too much smoke taste, also wine sales are down. I see the vineyards on three sides of me are abandoned too, the grapes are now shriveled to raisins. He said there is still a cost to cut off all the dead grapes to avoid stressing the vines.
Strange times.
