We've had enough of television programming.

FYI, Netflix has all the seasons of all the Star Trek series commercial free.

I can't remember how many years ago I discontinued DTV. It's been 5 or more. I got more disgusted with some of the paid program commercials as anything else.

I know.. Just like having the TV play shows while I'm running about the house.. Makes it fell like someones still here.

In the process of cutting DTV also, just received my outdoor antenna and can get 25 channels. That antenna and Roku will give us plenty of entertainment and was promised Fiber Optic internet by the middle of Sept, going from 1.5Mbps to 10Mbps will be a nice upgrade.

We were able to go from 1Mbps to 50 Mbps when they turned on the fiber optics they installed at the end of the street. They did have to update the line to the house, and upgrade to cat 5 cable for the phone jack.

Make sure and ask for promos and upgrades when they turn on the fiber. They were telling me I could upgrade to 6Mbps when I called them. Then found out that I could get up to 50Mbps. They had a same lifetime price for the 50Mbps for anyone who had the 1 Mbps plan. So our price didn't change, but our speed jumped 5,000 percent :cool2:

I dumped cable over a year ago, Like sixdogs said, most of the programming is crap, intermingled with commercials, and funding garbage that I don't want to fund. Unfortunately I'm too far away to use OTA so I'm downloading things to watch and I read a lot.
I tried Amazon Prime for awhile after seeing some documentaries that looked interesting as well as getting free shipping. But I live in Canadastan (Nova Scotia to be exact) and can't watch US based shows because it'll corrupt our system somehow.........Mike

I have a summer home in SW Nova Scotia, and we seem to get most US TV programs using the Bell satellite system.

If you're living in a rural area with poor analog reception in the past, you need to do some research before you plunk down cash for that 200 mile wonder antenna. Unfortunately, few know enough about the subject so they fall victim to the antenna advertising claims.

So what antenna do I buy in an area that would likely have a umber of free channels?

I also have never had any cable or satellite. ...I have a 40' tower and a winegard boosted antenna..after 30+ years I took the antenna down and put a new winegard up so I don't have to mess with it again...and most stations I get are putting out 3 or more digital channels.

I dropped cable years ago when they upped the price and dropped some good channels. I had already got 30/15meg fiber to the house so bandwidth not an issue. Bought a Roku which already has a tons of free channels you can add plus got Netflix. We also have Amazon prime for the quick shipping so get their streaming with that on the Roku. I do have an old antenna on the house with a rotor and it will pull in the local DTV channels but I hardly ever watch them because I can no longer stand the commercials. Netflix taints you that way. :D The superbowl and maybe MLB playoffs is about all I watch with the antenna, I prefer to listen to baseball on the radio. I don't miss cable one bit.

Go to antennaweb.org or tvfool.com and enter your address. They will tell you precisely what stations are where and how far away they are, and what type of antenna would be best.
I have been using Channelmaster antennas and they have performed well. I recently added their adjustable pre-amp and it really made a difference.

Good point on the amplifier, I did add a cheap RCA unit which helps considerably. If I could just keep the planes from flying overhead when the big game is on.

Well, we kicked satellite TV to the curb and cut the cable. No more $130 a month for 4 channels that we watch and 93 that we don't. It wasn't easy because the satellite company twisted every which way they could to get us to stay.

We bought a couple of over the air antennas and get around 30 local channels that are just fine for now. Next is a $20 or $30 month deal from Sing TV and that's the extent of it. Wife says she not sure she even wants the Sling thing because she enjoys the extra free time she now has as well as more energy. Getting that monkey off our backs feels better every day.
