Hopefully someone can tell me what is wrong with my logic. I have been looking for a small rotary cutter to make my life easier. It is not a have to have but it would be nice to have one. I found a new Land Pride RCR1542 at a local dealer but decided to wait to save some money thinking that if it was still there it might be cheaper in the off season. So I watched it sit on the lot for most of the summer and fall and the day before New Years Eve with snow on the ground I walked in to the dealer for the first time and said can I save any money on the RCR 1542 if I buy it now. The reply was "a little". While I waited for the price I asked if there was any discount for cash. I figured end of the year cash deal what more could a dealer want ? I was told nope no difference cash, check or charge. Then I was told the list price for the RCR1542 was $1400.00 but I could get it for 1300.00 now. Then I was told there could be a price increase next year. For 100.00 off I decided to walk.

I am confused. Is the margin so small that 100.00 is a big discount ? I would think the dealer would rather sell it now than pay for it until spring when it may or may not sell ? I would also think having a customer in the store now with cash in hand would motivate someone a little more than $100.00 ? What am I missing here ?

Look flor a good used one. Some dealers give a good bargain year round, some don't really care. Look at places like Craigslist, E-bay, your local paper. There are lots of them out there. I gave $400 for a 48 inch Land Pride. Looks new and still has stickers.

It all depends on who you are dealing with, a worker bee, or the owner/manager.

Tell you a little story.....

I was at Cabelas with a buddy of mine last summer, he was looking for a boat. He has been looking for quite a long time for one and what Cabelas had was just what he wanted. It was new, but a leftover, I think it was a 2008 model. Anyways, he went up to the sales office and there was one young kid in there and he asked the kid if there was someone around to discuss a purchase of a boat sitting outside. Now mind you this is a Sunday afternoon in June 2010, and the place was packed! The young man said there's nobody to help you, sorry! My buddy proceeded to tell him he is willing to purchase the boat and take it today, the kid said "sorry sir, you must come back Monday if you want the boat". Needless to say we were 4 hrs from home and was leaving that evening.

Point I'm making here, it seems that the sales and service these days just are not what they used to be, even in today's economic times! That boat was a 22K purchase price, and Cabelas let him walk, when all they had to do was show a LITTLE interest and they could have sold the boat that day, I know for a fact he would have bought the boat right there on the spot!

A $100 discount ammounts to a 7% +/- discount. He feels if you don't buy it now someone will in the spring for full price.

I'm no expert in the area but in the Summer of 2009 I bought a brand new 5' Bush Hog RZ60R unit for $1000. He gave me a discount for cash. It doesn't have a slip-clutch but I wish it did. Not sure how the two compare but been happy with mine so far. The Bush Hog units are powder coated which sold me. I was looking at the KK but their paint is GARBAGE and they always get rusty.

Mred look at it from his side just for a min. He has right at $1000.00 in the mower, has paid interest for a year (about &80.00), shipping another &80.00 and had to pay someone to set it up (another &20.00 cost). He isn't making alot.
But when he came back with "there could be a price increase next year." that right there would turn me off. Also, you know the price of steel is going up. No I don't and he doesn't eather. For some reason that just gets to me.

Most tractor dealers in my area won't even stock very many cutters, some no more than a couple so if you want one you order it and that way they don't lose money with it sitting around and what you pay is the current price.

TSC and other places like that have reduced prices on the ones that have faded paint, but the reduced price isn't all that much, my brother just bought one.

Used cutters are pretty common on Craigslist. Might not be the prettiest girls at the dance, but they're normally a few to several hundred dollars off the new price.
For a "nice to have" implement, CL might be worth a look...

You have to assume that the seller doesn't need the money that bad and there's not enough competition around. He's got it and you want it, not much to negotiate

Land pride is a higher end cutter. If it's not a "have to have" condsider a lower priced cutter.
I went to our Kubota dealer to buy a Land pride finish mower and the salesman talked to me for a few minutes and told me I would be better of going down the street to the TSC and buying a King Kutter. So I did just that and it's been in service for 5 years with out a problem. I saved over half what I would have had to pay for the Land Pride.
I think the Land Pride is better in some ways, especially the paint. I'm not using it to make a living so I will never realize the difference.
King Kutter is a reliable, servicable, inexpensive unit that is adequate for occasional use.
