What did you do on the first day of retirement?

If i had stayed in my first job, i could be retired now. However, having children later in life, i knew i wouldnt retire then even if i could, so i switched to a much better paying job, that allowed me to pay off my house, buy a tractor, and pay for my kids college, and build up my 401k. I have to work 4 yrs longer, but knowing it was going to happen anyways, it turned out well.

Forgot to add, I stayed at the first job 20 yrs and took a deferred retirement at age 60, so i still get a retirement, just 4 yrs later.

Don't be married to your job like I was. Make sure your family comes first. Took me way to long to figure that out.
Give your job your best but at quitting time you are done. You are not as indispensable as you may think so don't get "Used" to the detriment of family.

Yes, it is a lesson we all should be mindful of. I think we should work to feed our belly but family should feed our soul.

OK, I'm doing something wrong. I turned 55 yesterday and not retiring for 2-4 months. :confused3:

I guess it's like a co-worker says. " Paris Hilton was born retired, so age has nothing to do with it."

I am not sure I would say that.

I was always a planner, but that does not mean the women I have been married to could always see that. It is like anything, if you want something in the end, you got to put the time in up front, and I did, but two wives did not like it. I can see that, they wanted the husband at home, house, animals in the back forty, etc. Me, I worked for the railroad, then maritime industries so I was always gone. But when I had the chance to retire early, I took it.

Now...I don't know. I spend 95% of my time alone not counting my wife and (4) daughters. When i do get out I am really chatty because I have no one to talk too! In the woods there is a big buck and after 2 years we have really become friends, to the point he does not run off when I talk to him.

As for a cell phone, they say only 7% of the population does not have one so i figure I am just 6% away from being a 1%'er! I don't have one, but when I took a chainsaw to my face last winter it would have been nice. I made it out, but I spent 4 days in the hospital. That was probably good as they ultimately discovered I had cancer. It seems I am retired early, but facing everything older retired people do too. Darn it!

I had the same problem with the first wife too. She wanted the fruits of my labor but didn't want me gone working all the time. Just can't win for losing! Last wife is perfect.

More than a few marriages don't survive retirement... sad but I have seen it.

My ex and I grow apart not so much because I wasn't around... because we spent so much time and focus on the kids instead of nurturing our relationship. I changed jobs and started working from home thinking I could rebuild the relationship. That actually made things worse at that point. My second wife is perfect too (in case she ever reads this :D) Truthfully she is close to perfect and when spend lots of very enjoyable time to together as we are empty nesters now.

I don't things will change much when I retire because we already are so close. Just won't have the money to do all the travel we are able to do now but I will (god willing) spend much more time in my shop and maintaining the house an surrounds with all the tools I have amassed. :cool2:
