What did you do on the first day of retirement?

We had some chicken breasts with seasoning, rice pilaf, and broccoli a few days ago. Some t-bones with grilled mushrooms, and potatoes and onions in foil. Chicken half baked plain in butter with wild rice and frozen corn. Last night we had a wild salmon fillet in bourbon sauce, rice and cauliflower. Tonight we'll probably have hot dogs!

This is how you stay married long enough to get to retirement. Clearly defined roles and responsibilities are what makes things work. I stay the heck out of the wife's duties and she stays the heck out of mine.

On retirement, I started mentally getting ready 15 years before the hour. Then, when it came, I was ready to roll and had been sort-of living that way for a few years beforehand. It was a seamless transition and I already had my direction and objectives in hand.

Amen.

Another educational thread and Public Service Announcement...

Some of my friends retire way before the wives did... Law Enforcement, Utilities, Military... etc...

The ones with a plan fared much better... many plans included work but it is different if you are on your own schedule and working towards YOUR goal.

None of the men in my family has ever retired... so it is not a skill passed on.

Yep. Once I got my kitchen/pantry and freezers stocked, I had enough of everything to make at least two meals of it. Anytime I pull something out to use, I add it to the grocery list. Wife and I argue about this. She likes to put it on the list once the last one is used. I like to put it on the list if we only have one left, and then buy two more at the store!
I am like you only of the commonly used items (coffee, dishsoap, salad dresssing, etc.) I buy ONLY if on sale and then buy 5 or 6. I watch the pantry fairly closely and add things to the grocery list ahead of time. My wife waits until I leave the store to text me things she needs. We are opposite.

Sometimes I wish I had a barcode scanner by the recycle/trash bin in the kitchen. I could just scan stuff as I dispose of it, and have it make the grocery list for me. :)

We also keep a well stocked pantry and multiple small chest freezers. We could go a year or more and still be well fed. Blows me away how most city-folk are so unprepared for storms and such. I could keep my freezers frozen by running the generator a couple hours a day.

My wife compains about me not cooking, but if i did, i would reorganize everything. And we all know how that would go. I keep wanting to have things stocked, she would rather run to the store every other day, sometimes every day. When our fridge is half full, she complains it is full...

She is a great cook.

Good idea. I once organized the freezer, made a list of what was inside, taped it to the lid. It never got updated when things got pulled.

And if i need a can of cream of chicken soup, ill buy at least a half dozen at once. She buys one can.

But she is an excellent cook.

I've got 3-4 of those never updated freezer lists.

Does everyone defrost things from the freezer in the fridge? Energy wise it makes sense and a chicken is defrosted in 2 days as an example. I figure that saves me maybe two cents a year but more importantly makes me think about the next meal. We are on a 2 day cycle of cooking one day then leftovers the second day so it works out.
