What digital camera do you have/want?

What's the Canon equiv of the Nikon 80-200/2.8 running these days? Seems on our Alaska trip sombody had a Canon 70-300 USMS lens that was not too badly priced.

Tamron and others make nice 28-300's these days. They have 80-200/2.8's but I found little price difference to the Nikon glass.

I REALLY like the 24-120/3.5-5.6. It covers a nice range, which would work nice on a digital. Nikon offers it in an ED-IF/AFS VR configuration now... I wish I had that one, but I bet it costs a bit /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif It syas it's a 36-180 equiv on a digital.

Canon has 3, 70-200 lenses. The least expensive is the 70-200mm f4 L series at about $500. A bargain lens that is superbly sharp. Then there is the 70-200mm 2.8 L and the 70-200 2.8 L IS. Both are incredible, I've tried both. They retail for about $1200 and $1800 as I recall. There is a 28-135mm IS as well that is rated very well. It is not an "L" lens which is Canons top glass. I owned 1 Canon L series, a 135mm f2.0 L. It had DOF control, the best in any lens I have used including my Nikon.

Tamron, Tokina and Sigma have some specialty lenses that are very well rated. Well worth consideration and many well built.

Got the kit with the 18-55mm. Was $809. Not much chance to use it. Sure is light weight!

I think the computations and the saving of the image occurs after the picture is taken. The delay at the front end might be focus. On my A70, when I use a long shutter speed to take a night shot, its takes like 30 seconds for the picture to save, so it must be some computing going on there. Its probably trying to figure out why I wanted to take such a picture. The is a delay on the front end of a shot, but if I push the button halfway and get the focus and light readings on the screen, its ready and will snap immediately when I press it the rest of the way.

Well, there is a ton of info out there on the Digital Rebel. There isn't much to add. So far it really is a great camera. The finish is better than many make it sound, and the kit lens does a fine job. I almost didn't get the lens, but you are hard pressed to get a wideangle for anything near that price. I figure that I can get a lot of use out of it, and add lenses. When Canon comes out with their new version of the 10d or 1d I might add one of those.

I'll probably get an elph for a pocketable go anywhere toy, soon.

OK, I understand and in that case that is unacceptable isn't it? There is a memory buffer where the picture data is stored I think. Some cameras allow a sequence of rapid shots before the buffer is filled. I wonder why digital cameras have the delay you describe, does the Canon S50 digicam for example have such a delay? In a film camera metering and shutter release are nearly instantaneous, to me, the shutter should fire when you push the button. J

Turn OFF Auto-focus, and it will. Or, just push the shutter down half way so you can do the auto focusing BEFORE you are ready to take the picture.

Well, that is probably his solution but how do you know when an action shot will present itself so you can hold the button down halfway or turn off auto focus? Surely and it must be that at least some digicams have instantaneous shutters. Maybe the real solution is to get a new camera with a more predictable shutter. Glad y'all brought this up so if I am shopping for one it will be the first thing I check for. My autofocus Canon point and shoot film cameras fire the shutter when I push the shutter button, maybe not quite as quick as an SLR but plenty fast enough for me so I suspect it is not the autofocus mechanism that causes the delay, could be wrong. J

Why are my photos always taken too late?

I think what is explained in that link is the NORM in most low-end digital cameras. You will probably have to buy a good high-end camera ( ~$3000+) to eliviate the shutter delay problems. Good luck in your search.

Yes, I think that is probably the problem, like my scanner needs a first pass to look at the picture before the actual scan takes place. If this is the case then I won't be getting a digital camera /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. New is not always better. I don't think I will be willing to spend more than 500 dollars on a plastic camera. That new Canon Rebel digital SLR looks nice--but I do not want to invest in a new outfit that will be obsolete next year. I think I will go look at some of the higher end digital point and shoots like the Canon S50 and some of the Olympus units to see if the shutter lags noticeably on them. Does the Canon SLR have shutter lag?
