If i had me a tiltin boxblade and a canopy ta keep my gord from gettin scorched.............I would just want another list of do-dads. I truely love my 4200 fer sure but,like most of us here i think i could point out a few "what the hell did ta do it like that for's" to BIG john himself.

What I like least about my 4100 is the forward and downward facing exhaust. Seems like you suck more exhaust fumes than is necessary. Improvements I'd like to see - telescoping hitch arms and a swiveling seat rank up there on my wish list.

It took me a while to think of something that I *don't* like about my tractor, since I love just about everthing about it, but here goes (and maybe someone can clue me in about why it might have been designed this way):
I have a JD5410, with power-reverser tranny. Basically it has 3 gear ranges (A,B,C) and 4 speeds w/in each range, so A1 is the slowest and C4 is the fastest (get it?). In each gear I can also flip between forward and reverse, without clutching or stopping, a real nice feature (and a $4000 option).
Anyway, for the life of me, I can't figure out why it was designed such that the reverse speed in any gear/range combo is faster than the same gear/range forward. For example, c4 is like 17MPH forward, but 19MPH in reverse???
I would have preferred that either the where the same speed, or else 10-20% SLOWER in reverse for each gear. not FASTER...anyone else's tractor like this???

Elephant Hunting....
When I was in Kenya on a photo safari, we were going down a narrow dirt road in the bush when a bull elephant stepped out into the road and decided he wanted to "play" with the cute little white van. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif We didn't have room to turn around, so the driver put the van in reverse and backed up as fast as we could go. A few times that elephant was only a few feet away and after what seemed to be a mile, he slowed down and we found a wide spot to turn around a short while later./w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif We finally had time to catch our breath, get our hearts restarted, and clean the "nuggets" out of our britches./w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif Since that day, I always wanted a fast reverse./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hmmm, let me see? The color's right, the levers are easy to reach, the loader control location is great, the HST pedal movement is smooth as baby behind, diff lock is easy to reach, and the brakes are on the correct side. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
If I gotta complain and I don't its that the turnbuckle adjusters are awkward to reach with those fatty R4 tires and I keep forgetting to put the little hairpins back. A swivel seat would be great addition, and although the cruise control setup is more than adequate a different design would work better for me.
Oh yeah, there's that 20" step up onto the platform, by the end of a long day its one big step.

ejb - I gotta give you that one - it's decidedly odd that reverse would be faster. I know that the orange tractors have reverse set up to be a little slower than forward in the GST models, and I'm pretty sure it is in the HST, too, but I'd have to check that one to be sure. Strange...

On just about any tractor I've driven with a gear shuttle type transmission...{don't drive hydro's?}...
Reverse has always been slightly faster{about 10%}... If you use a loader it's nice... more natural ... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yep, reverse is a little slower than forward. I don't think I've ever driven a tractor that was faster in reverse than forward. Learned something else new today./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
