This sounds like a silly question, but my 2320 arrives next week and wondering what the concensus method is
* for filling the tank. Do most of you use a good old red plastic container . . or do you go with a bigger one and some sort of hand pump?

With a 5-6 hour?? tank range I would think two cans might be needed.
I use this for filling my Kubotas .
It would work perfect for your 2320 too.http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk286/lb59/100_2303.jpg

We use the 30-gal gas caddy manufactured here in my home town by Handy Manufacturing. Makes it nice when time for fuel cuz I can load/unload into back of truck with loader and eliminates having to lug heavy, leaky cans. Not the cheapest alternative but definately more user friendly and cleaner!! I can't keep those little yellow seals/discs that keep the fuel from leaking out nozzle (or keep dirt & debris out) around for more than a month or two before I lose em! Pain in the a*# to boot. Check out the gas caddy here [/url

Rig your caddy up like this set up and you won't have to load it onto or unload it off of your pick up.
You won't need the loader either.
You can use 5 gallon cans with this set up but you won't have to lift them .

I use a five gallon yellow plastic container with a non-spill spout. You can turn it upside down with the cap off and no fuel will come out. The fuel is released when the spout is inserted into the tank because a tab on the spout catches on the edge of the fuel tank opening, pushing it backwards and opening a valve in the spout. When you lift the container out of the tank, the valve closes again, shutting off fuel flow. I haven't spilled a drop yet. I believe I bought the container at Tractor Supply.

DrawBacks of this type can

1*You can't use a funnel with this can.
2*Fuel don't get filtered so you are dumping any water and crud out of the can right into the tractor tank.
3*You have to hold the heavy awkward can while it empties into the tractor tank.
This outfit eliminates all 3 of these problems and you can still use the can with it if you wish.
If you decide to use the can you won't have to hold or lift it using this rig.

Different strokes for different folks. Holding cans, especially if they can spill is a hassle.

Been there, done that, standing on a front tire to try to pour in fuel and not spill it especially if there is a wind.

Pumping is nifty and neat but not cheap.

Overhead with gravity flow is nifty, neat and gravity is free. The only pump involved is the pump on the delivery truck.

If I was going to only store 50 gal I think I would use a drum that I could raise and lower with FEL or hoist or...

You put an empty drum in the pickup and go to the supplier where you can fill the drum with a pump.

Drive the drum home and siphon it into an empty drum on the ground. Use a hand pump to fill the tractor from the drum on the ground.

Improved system: Use the FEL to move the full drum from the pickup to its elevated storage location. Use gravity to fill vehicles from the overhead tank. Only pump is at the vendor's location. Gravity is reliable. I get about 5 gal/min with my gravity system with a fairly fine filter at the tank outlet before the hose and nozzle. If 50 gal isn't enough use more drums, setting them one at a time on the elevated stand.

What do I use to fill my JD with Diesel?

My wife's credit card.

What I do with those new style ventless cans that everyone b!tches about is, I take the spout off and just pour the can straight into the wide filler neck on the 5425. I can get the mouth of the can right up to the filler neck and dump the can in without spilling a drop. It empties pretty fast too.

I use a yellow 20 litre plastic container with a Max Flo-n-Go. Set the container on the arm of the FEL and pump the handle a couple times to creat the syphon action and a way we go. I bought them both at Walmart. I think the hose is long enough I could put the container in the bucket, lift it up higher and the flow of fuel would be faster.
I think it is rated for approx. 2 gal per minute.

1* I need to figure out how I am going to get my 30 gallon drum over to the gas station.
2* anyone got a calculation for the weight of 30 gallons of diesel fuel
3*30 pounds for the drum.

1*You don't take that drum to the station.
Get your fuel in cans or another drum and pump the fuel out of them with your pump.
There is no lifting of cans or manhandling drums this way.
2* 225 pounds for the fuel.
3*way under 30 pounds/more like about 10 pounds I'd think.

Take a good look at this picture of my set up.
Most pump and drum set ups only have 2 hoses connected to the pump.
If you will notice my set up has 3 hoses connected to the pump.
This third hose is the secret to easy effortless hassle free filling of the drum.
The 3rd hose idea is brilliant in it's simplicity but the credit for the idea goes to a fellow TBN member, not me.

1. Why would I need a funnel when I can insert the nozzle directly into the tractor tank without spilling a drop?
2. The can is clean - water can consensate anywhere including your tractor's tank after you've gone to all the trouble of filtering it out from the can.
3. You just have to lift it to the tank opening. Then it sits on the edge of the tank while it empties.

Why make simple things complicated?
