What else is a PHD useful for?

On a a fairly lightweight CUT, an ice-fishing auger? Plow the snow away with the FEL, back the PHD up & drill the holes.

I have and they are unbelievably dangerous. Difference was it was attached the rear axle of a truck but the same idea.

On a PHD it would be free to flair around and take off anything from your knees to your head. Especially if the log starts spinning

I think that would be the important thing, you would have to build some kind of fixture to put the log in or have a brace sticking out off the tractor to keep the log from spinning around. Looks like a lot of jumping on and off the tractor to me. I'll just keep on the the hydraulic splitter I have.
I have been following the thread with some interest because there is a PHD for sale just up the road from me but I'm reluctant to buy something that I "might" find a use for. If they could reverse I would be more interested. In fact if I ever did feel the need for a PHD I would try to get a hydraulic drive so it could screw itself back out of the ground not just into the ground.

I used mine to double dig my garden. I drilled about a 40 holes in my little corn patch. Driled them deep! It was red clay down deep that I brought up to the top. Then I went and hauled loader after loader of bottom land soil and dumped in the holes. I then smoothed it all down. That was ten years ago and to this day that corn patch is the richest most productive garden patch I have. The red clay that I spread out over the top has been tilled and humus added so that its now rich soil also. I use mine to plant trees. Dig holes for my bluebird houses that I put on posts. Very handy but a pain to take off and put on.

I think the other recommended use is planting trees. I've seen them with 24" bits.

burying cats and dogs last dog was 3 holes and shovel to connect the holes..little animals are real easy.

After throwing the dead critter in the hole, you could put the auger back in and make a critter smoothie.

For the OP's needs, if I could rent a post driver, I would go that way for sure! I have a PHD and it gets used for post holes, but the hard work is tamping the ground after you get the post in A post driver puts in a good solid post without the heavy manual work required for tamping and works in conditions that a PHD does poorly in, such as dry ground that turns to powder and can't be tamped tight or is too wet and clumpy. OTOH, from what I've heard, a post driver is a two man job.

I bought mine for $50 at an auction with a 6 inch auger. A new 12 inch auger cost more than the whole PHD I have used it for post holes, woodshed and hunting blind foundation digging (holes for cement), tree planting, pulling barbed wire out of the bush and stirring the compost heap. Not sure I would buy a new one -- when people discover how much work it is to dig post holes and do fencing they often seem to come up for sale:thumbsup:
