Hi All,
I have about 4-5 acres of "lawn" around the house I recently bought and noticed when I last mowed it that there were just as many weeds as grass. What would be the best (and most economical) way to help thicken up the grass so it doesn't turn into a weedpatch in a couple of years? I'm not looking to turn it into a fairway, but want it to look better than what it does now.

Freds,First thing you need to do is get rid of the weeds. Most economical way is to spray with 2-4-D or Trimec.Of course you need a sprayer to cover that many acres.

I have a 3-point,PTO driven,55 gal.unit with a 10' boom that
works very well.

Once you have the weeds under control, then fertilize, most economical way is to buy a 3-point,PTO driven Fertilizer Spreader and buy the fert. in bulk form from an area dealer, must cheaper than the 50 lb. bags.

You can also have the fert. blended to what ever formula you want; 8-22-11,12-12-12,ect.

You see, looks to me like you need a couple more attactments for your tractor to make this work!!!!

Hmmm, more attachments /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.
I just bought a post hole digger and brush hog at the new TSC that opened by me, I'll hafta rent or borrow for now.
I read somewhere that you can't spray unless it's early spring or late fall because you will burn the grass, do you know anything about that? Also, where does one go to buy in bulk? Agway?

Thanks for the response.

One of the best methods of weed control is regular mowing. Additionally, there are some fertilizers which have weed killers incorporated, which can be spread with a broadcast spreader, ofter easier to control than liquid spraying.

Most of the Broadleaf Type Chemicals can be sprayed in the Summer months,if you watch the temperature, should'nt spray much above 80,and not be in the middle of a drouth.

I live in an Ag Area where there are Fertilizer Dealers that blend and spread Fert. for the area Farmers.I buy our Chemical;2 1/2 gallon jugs and Bulk Fert. from them, much less expensive.

Yes,you can buy bags of Fert. and Weed control combo. But to cover 4-5 acres effectively, not very economical.

Another avenue might be to hire someone to spray and fertilize for you,but thats no fun!!
