The battery guns "pulse", so there are a series of tiny shots of grease for as long as you hold the trigger.

I have never had problems with grease guns like I see here. My Dad had an old hand pump grease gun that he filled from a 5 gallon bucket(what a mess to clean each time). He used that thing for 40 years and never had an issue with it. Some of my guns (I have 2 manual pump and a pneumatic cheapy) I have had for 30 year and they all still work as they should. I rarely use the hand pump ones but still do occasionally. The pneumatic one, I got from Atwood's for less than $20 about 4 years ago, but I see that now they are almost $40 but it works pretty good. Every time I have to put in a new tube of grease, I have to remove the ball check and let it pump out the air, then reinstall the ball and tighten the housing. It wont clear the trapped air, but other than that it pumps the entire tube dry each time.

After the fiasco of trying to grease the backhoe last night I used the search feature and found this thread. I have to say the Milwasukee M12 12v gun is interesting. We have one lever gun that works OK but the pull handle came off. We have one lever type that when you run out of grease and pull the handle to install a new tube about 70% of the tube comes out of the back end (yes 70% of the tube) and it is about 20% on the pistol grip.

The physical pain to use a hand gun is high in my case plus the mess ours makes means we need to do something.

$200 is a lot of money for a grease gun but not greasing as often as needed is not cheap either.

Thanks for the many posts and photos.
The rubber seals must be damaged. I have never had any problems like that. They usually clean the grease tube fairly clean. The cup of the rubber seal should face the top of the gun, perhaps somehow the rubber cup got flipped the wrong way which is letting the grease by-pass. You may need to take off the handle and let the plunger extend out of the gun tube then re-insert the plunger into the gun after repairing the seal or just flipping it back forward.

Gary it has to be bad seals I agree. I saw a very old CAT labeled lever grease gun on E-bay for a little over $25 and did not look at the shipping cost. I like hand guns because they are so simple to keep hanging around handy to grab but the three I have purchased over the last 20 years have been more trouble than any we had as a kid and we owned two AC-72 pull type combines that must have had 10K zerks each. :(

I found the Milwaukee M12 12v grease gun this AM on e-Bay near me for $185 with free shipping. I feel like a fool in some ways but a commercial grade hand grease guns are going for $40-$100. It is to arrive in two days so I am hopefully I finally got a grease gun that I will not have to fight with and waste 50% of each tube of grease. From Youtube I know it is loud and I will not be able to hear the grease popping. On the backhoe with an easy to use gun I plan to grease it more often with a set number of shots. On it making grease show means we waste a lot of grease due to heavy pin wear because it smashes out when we start working so we can keep grease at the wear points better. The grease we make show does little good other than to push out the water. I do like to over grease before parking outside for the winter.

I wanted the Lithium Ion which in our case should be fine with no charging for months at a time and I will just hide it somewhere near the equipment so it stays dry. :)

I know I am going to be excited at least for the next two days. :) Actually many reviews stated it was the best grease gun they have ever used. If the battery and charger will last for years and it works well it will not be that expensive and a lot of grease will help slow the wear rate of our worn out pins. Spending 2 hours to grease the backhoe due to bad grease guns and fittings that do not want to take grease is a hassle so it does not get down often enough even if the typical usage is only for 15-60 minutes.

The Milwaukee M12 12v grease gun came today. We put the battery on the charger to top it off (2 lights were showing on the gun. I put a tube of grease in the gun and then the storm hit hard. When I got back into the house the battery charger light was already green. I love Lithium Ion for power tools.

Tomorrow I will try it out. It was $185 to the door out of west end of TN off of eBay. I could have gotten the 18v version for $85 more dollars but did not see the point. I have ordered the 12v flashlight of the M12 series. I looked at the guts before I put in the grease and the plunger seal seemed to be the kind that can not flip/roll so so far so good. It did make the pumping sound right out of the box.

The Zareba electric fence charger came today so it was like Christmas in May. :)

I got tired of changing cartridges and pumping my old grease gun. I bought a KTC 5 Gallon Air Operated High Pressure Grease Pump with a 20' hose direct from KTC back in December for $271. The same KTC pump from Amazon was going to be $120 more, $50 more on the price, $50 more for shipping, and $20 tax. I had to order a 5 gallon bucket of grease from O'Reilly Auto as no one kept one in stock locally. So far it works great. Plug it in to my compressor and just wheel it out to the driveway to grease up tractors and trailers.

repowell that sounds like a good system especially since you have a shop, compressor set up. The portability of the electric gun should work good for our Open Air set-up. :)

We would still be doing it by hand had the grease guns worked correctly. This weekend I should get an idea if the M12 Milwaukee 12v grease gun is OK for our needs.

Well we got to use the Milwaukee M12 electric gun today and it was awesome. I let our son do some on the backhoe today and asked him if it is a keeper or do we need to return it. He said keep it. Actually until I googled grease guns I did not know about the battery driven grease guns. Wish we had purchased earlier instead of messing with the old guns.

Have two of them, very happy with em!
