Re: \"What have I hit while bush hogging?\"

Ah, a topic I can sink my blades into!!

When we first bought our property , Growth above the hood of my Old Nasty 135 clearing with the 5' bushog everything is going smooth, Then I hear this WHIP SCHWING Shaking feeling , Quick clutch raise bushog look under what do I see TELEPHONE COMPANY DROPWIRE all wrapped around everything... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Turns out a neighbor who moved in before us had temporary service until the street was finished and the wire went across our lot and was abandoned when disconnected...

Next story Bushogging for a friend about 2-3 acres, By the end of this job I had KILLED the following:
One copperhead snake /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
one black snake /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
one box turtle /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
one small racoon /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
and one unidentafiable creature all at no charge /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

( poor bird, let it live. mean ole tractor........heehhehehhe

kidding aside, is some places running it over could be illegal, seem to remember endangered........not sure though )

A law making it illegal to run over a mama bird and her eggs makes about as much sense as making it illegal to run over boulders. The law is no deterrent at all, and serves no purpose except to harrass. Sometimes we just run over things. If you don't believe it, read on! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Now, let me go find something really gnarly to run over. Maybe a roll of steel banding material. Or, perhaps a Kevlar blanket would be interesting. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: \"What have I hit while bush hogging?\"

The first time I used a flail mower I got it all setup, throttled the engine up and got about five feet before it I hit a old garden hoes. I remember thinking during the next hour of cutting wrapped up hose that so far I have 20 minutes of setup and hookup, one hour of cutting hoes and 5 seconds of mowing. I sure hope the rest of the job goes better than this.

Re: \"What have I hit while bush hogging?\"

I shredded up a basket ball sized Hornets nest hanging in tall heavy weeds.
Never knew it untill next pass, the air was filled with em.
Needless to say I turned the tractor around mighty quick.
Drove back out later with the truck (windows up) to survey the destruction, they were trying to re-group on some other weeds, rolled the window down and sprayed most of em.

Re: \"What have I hit while bush hogging?\"

Whew! Last year while mowing a recently reclaimed pasture, I got off the Fergy to pick up a softball sized rock that the frost had driven up over the winter. Just as I bent over to grab it I heard the humming /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and got it in the right lense of my trifocals /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif! It was a hornet nest! I got back on the tractor and got the heck out of Dodge! On the next pass I saw one twice the size on the back side of the field. I left those tufts of grass until after a good freeze before i did anything about them.

Re: \"What have I hit while bush hogging?\"

I got cheesed off at a cast iron barrel pump and flung it out into the field. Yep, I forgot about it, and ran over it. It grenaded, and I am still looking for shrapnel 3 years later.

I ran upon a kildeer sitting on her nest yesterday while mowing. She stood her ground, and puffed up and faced 4000 pounds of throbbing, angry steel. Get ready to meet your maker Ms. Plover! Hmmm... I stopped 2' short of her, and thought about it. She was determined to protect those 4 eggs, and would shower me with her own blood if I was foolish enough to run over her. Hmmmm... better not! Needless to say, there is a 2'x2' place left unmowed. Darned bird. Next time, I MOW YOU!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
i have done the same thing many times-motherhood is something to watch- she would have died protecting them------you are a good guy

Re: \"What have I hit while bush hogging?\"

There was another thread like this a year or so ago and I think that FarmswithJunk won top honors for hitting/running over/shredding the most number of (and most bizzare) objects. I recall that he (unfortunately) had taken out at least fawns on different occasions that were bedded in tall grass in the path of the mower and he had no chance to avoid hitting them. I think we all hate for those kinds of things to happen but they can be really hard to avoid.

I myself haven't hit much anything really but one thing that definitely made me pucker up was a piece of a plowshare. The mower deck dug into a high spot and the blades dug up the old, broken piece of plow. The first thing it did was to punch a one inch hole in the side of the deck, then it rattled around inside the deck for what seemed like minutes but was really only a few seconds. It made a HECK of an awful noise before it finally got spit out though!!

Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

I hate it when a logging choker gets wrapped around the hog spindle! Real fun.

Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

If you think a logging choker is fun, try about 60 feet of 3/8 guywire the power company tossed into the edge of the woods. Nasty and destructive. Finished off the old 6' bush hog i had bought used.
