Looks as though you're doing the easier thing in using mortar-less block. Lowes, Home Depot and others generally sell some varieties of these now. You only need to level them front-back and really not that critical, as most of them slope backwards anyway the way they join together. They can undulate side-to-side.
There are some very high mortarless walls around here. Think the highest (in tiers each about 6-8') is the one on the north side of the Lowes site north up 25 from Charlottesville.
I built a long wall in Baton Rouge and another just out my window at the base of the slope NE of the pool here. I built a small one on top of a pair of those ATV ramps placed side by side to keep my driveway from caving in on the inlet end to a culvert.

I'm not familiar with that type of block. Is there a locking flange on the bottom to keep them from pushing out or do you have to fill them with concrete?

last summer I did a curving wall with the same type of block, hollow w/ the pins. Wait till you get to cut and fit the caps. That was a challange! If you come up with an easy way to install those please post it. I have more wall building days ahead.

There are glass filled clips that clip onto the back of the block. The next course hooks over the clips and it spaces the next course back 3/4". If I can, I'll try to take a photo tonight to attempt to illustrate the concept. You fill each course with the 3/4" stone, no cement.

Great looking job!!! Now you need a vacation from all that work.
Next time you take a vacation, you're more than welcome to come up to the Green Mountains. Next project my wife wants is a retaining wall on that slope I just finished so she can put in a vegetable/herb garden for next year. BTW: Bring the Massey and, especially the dump wagon. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
