What is a "grey market" tractor?

I think that is a double split on hairs. If something is not going to be sold in a market.. it wasn't 'meant' for that market.

In fact.. you could go so far to say that they are not originally sold in this market because they are not meant for it. Kind of a recursive argument, beacuse both have nearly the same meaning... which comes down to a ? grammar issue?

Many companies design a product specifically for use in the US that never make it to our market. Due to a thousand reasons (money, change in material cost, company restructuring ect ect..) they just cant get the item on our shelf, but it is sold locally. Your comment is true of some products but it is not a true statement of all the products that are imported under the grey label. So yes some grey market products were not meant for our market and some grey market products were meant for our market but all were not sold in our market.

Hmm.. if a unit.. a 'widgit' was designed for our market, produced to our specs, under contract to sell, and could have been legally sold under all trade and tarrif agreements.. met all the licensing and stickering.. etc.. and then just fell thru before delivery? I'd argue that that was an undelivered item PRODUCED for the domestic market.. wheter a unit sold or not.

A grey market item is the sale domestically of an item not originally produced for our domestic market.

I still think we are splitting the hair pretty fine here though ;)

I have a description of my grey market tractor. It is the grey stuff that is clogging up my hydraulic system. THUS marketing of the grey sludge to get it out of Japan= Grey Market:rolleyes:

You sure that sludge was added in Japan?

Maybe you've discovered some VN 'factory rebuilt' shop's Hazardous Waste Disposal Plan. :D

This isn't as unlikely as it sounds. A few years back, trails of radioactivity were found on the streets in Sacramento. These were found to be hydraulic system leaks left by the region's largest waste hauler (dumpster dumper). They had been refilling the leaky hydraulic systems on their trucks with some mystery fluid that they were supposed to deliver to a recycling plant.

I've wondered if the 'shipping fluids' in the Chinese tractors, and maybe in the VN refurbs, was nothing more than recycled mystery fluid.

I know a guy that got one of those recons, and he said the good looking 'green' water in his radiator tested out JUST LIKE water when using a radiator flaot tester... for all we know.. could have been green food coloring!

I think it's time to update the 411 on grey tractors, something I never heard of til a couple years ago, bottom line IMO it's all about the money.

Yep, All about the money. I had a case 580G backhoe with a sideshift extenda-hoe. The David Brown engine and hydraulics on that tractor made it a beast.

First time I went to the Case dealer for parts they told me Case doesn't make a "G" model, that's when I realized it was a grey market. After we finally ID the beast, parts were no problem.

"Had" any regrets? :bawling: Wonder if that grey tractor was any cheaper back in 84 compared to its counterpart.......After watching most of this video, it does look like quite the machine, probably built better back then to.>> Case 58G Design - YouTube

No regrets, needed to sell it when I was going through chemo, couldn't keep up on the maintenance.

When I sold it (at 20+ years old) I could still lift all 4 tires off the ground with the bucket and down riggers and turn it off. A week later it would still be up in the air. Tightest hydraulics I have ever owned.
