What is BX23 fuel consumption while running a PTO generator ?

The nrlm link seems to explain it the way I think I was explaining it. If u have a 40 year old tractor, the tractor can run on heating oil...(but not legally?).

But, my 2012 tractor MUST have ULSD... Heating oil in mine would damage my engine... (am I wrong about that???)

#2 heating oil and off road ULSD are very different fuels. While a furnace can run on the more expensive dyed ULSD, my tractor cannot run on my furnace heating oil... (right???)

Aren't the new engines designed to run only on ULSD? I thought new engines would be damaged by the high sulfer heating oil. My tractor fuel fill clearly states ULSD only. Dyed or clear, but must be ULSD.

Are people able to run new diesel engines with #2 heating oil without damaging the engine?

Thank u for the links... And feedback. I appreciate it.

Just for comparison my L3240 paired to a 15k generator runs my household right around the gallon per hour mark. Sometimes more and sometimes less depending on what is running.

Some of the threads I was remembering:

NRLM Fuel

I asked our supplier and they said that the place they buy from carries dyed and un-dyed ULSD, no LSD. They deliver fuel oil (HHO) and offroad diesel.

This would all depend on your distributor of fuel. The company I work for does not sell true 'home heating oil' retail anymore. True home heating oil, is still 500 PPM fuel, but it has a solvent blended into it to keep the nozzles of the furnaces clean. We do whole sale it to other distributors still, however. Do not use home heating oil in a vehicle - it will destroy the inner workings of your fuel pump with the solvent, as well as the rings of your engine, etc. Remember, a furnace doesn't really have moving parts.

Some other retailers will blend Kerosene and Diesel together in a 70/30 mixture and call it home heating oil.

We sell dyed fuel as home heating oil - our choice. Price wise, it's much cheaper for the consumer as well.

Aaron Z,

So this knowledgeable poster (Foxtrot08) also believes true heating oil would damage a modern diesel engine.

The OP lives in NH.

I deliver petroleum in Maine, NH, VT, and MA.

If the OP is using Home Heating oil in his BX... it is not Off-road ULSD... unless it is being delivered from a Boston terminal.

If I load Heating Oil in Boston... the terminal I load at doesn't have any. So that WOULD be Dyed ULSD being delivered to homes.

If the OP is getting fuel from Portsmouth or any of the NH bulk plants... it is real #2 Home heating oil... not ULSD.

So... I'm curious.

Is he using home heating oil? If he is, how long has he been using it? And why hasn't it damaged his engine?

I have plenty of heating oil at home. I wouldn't take a five gallon jug to the gas station for clear road TAXED ULSD... if I could use Heating oil in my tractor.

Maybe the OP can help me understand...

Thanks for your helpful links.

Hi, I have a BX2360 with 60" MMM. The fuel consumption is about one Gallon per hour when I run it at 3000RPMs - the rated speed for the MMM to operate. The fuel use does not change much if I am mowing thick grass or not. The usage seems to be more dependent on the RPMs that engine is turning. I imagine the tractor has to turn at 3000 RPMs to Mage the rear PTO turn at 540.

As I said, one should ask their distributor what they are selling. In OUR case, the place we buy from runs 3 trucks and does a mix of HHO/offroad diesel deliveries, so he ONLY gets Dyed ULSD (IIRC, his supplier only sells that). He is also the local Kubota dealer, so if his fuel causes a problem with our Kubotas, there is only one person to work with.

Should be interesting to hear the answer, I would suspect that his supplier is selling dyed ULSD as HHO.

Aaron Z,

I like this one: He is also the local Kubota dealer, so if his fuel causes a problem with our Kubotas, there is only one person to work with.
That is a cool way to go :) No middle man...

Thanks for all your feedback. I appreciate it.
