What is correct way to use thread sealant?

The last time I modified one of my tractors hydraulics I used all ORB and JIC fittings and had no leaks other than on a hose I had made up. I have done a lot of threaded jobs and they work fine, but my preference is ORB and JIC if possible. Faster for me for sure.
