I used to live next to one, and near several, antique covered bridges in Bucks County, PA. A truck would wipe out one or another every few years, and leave us residents stranded with long detours.
PennDOT hated them, and sometimes forced the townships to take over repairs and maintenance, versus tearing down and replacing with modern bridges. Sometimes theyād make them one-way only, which was a total PITA, but helped avoid collisions by two people trying to pass one another on a one-lane covered bridge.
