I don't tolerate that. If somebody can't control their dog then I will. If they have a collar on I hook my thumb in it and drag them down: otherwise I put my knee up to keep them from jumping. Worse case scenario get your hand on their muzzle and push, but I prefer not to do that. It isn't their fault they have an idiot for an owner.

That was my intension many years ago with our 6 month lab/mix. But I missed my aim and she got back-handed on the nose. That accident was all it took, she never put her paws on another person.

My first dog liked to jump and as mentioned before I took her a lot of places to socialise her. I learned to step on her lead when somebody approached her, holding her paws onto the floor. She was smart and didn't take long to catch on. Yet for the rest of her life when somebody approached her while on lead she would jerk, as if she was jumping against the leash.

I think the problem is that in recent years the hiring practices for trucking has been laxed and I see the results of it daily. Not so profesional anymore.

Got to see some of that just this morning, after seeing a tri-axle pulling a heavy trailer hit a parked car on a straight stretch of street in town. Looked like the dude wasn’t even going to going to stop, until a few residents got in front of him, and reminded him that his boss’s business name was printed big and bold on the side of his truck.

That's crazy. They forget they are in huge mobile billboards usually.

I drove truck in the military, drove all over the US other countries so I have a bit of experience to back up my opinion that they are some of the worst drivers on the road today, at least around here.

Keep in mind that some years ago the US signed an agreement with our neighboring countries to honor the credentials their commercial vehicles/drivers have when they cross over into the US. So the rules/laws/training we require for US drivers do not apply to those coming over from Mexico or Canada. Had several discussion about this when I was still working and had to interact with drivers coming out of Canada. So many of them couldn't read or speak English - no idea how they managed to navigate without being able to read road signs!

Yeah good point. Many of the drivers I encounter shouldn't even be allowed to drive a passenger vehicle, let alone a multi ton tractor/ trailer. Its scary how bad some of them are.

I'm no expert, but I've done a bit of reading on this and have watched many YouTube videos posted by truckers in recent years, talking about how atrocious the pay has become. Due to so many big companies taking over from mostly independent contractors, the drivers are getting pinched from both sides. After paying their fuel, maintenance, insurance and licensing fees, and then seeing how they get screwed on hours waiting to load and unload, it's not a very good way to support a family, as it had been in the past.

I think the yearly turnover has gone as high as 80% in recent years, which was never the case a generation ago. Whatever the true number is, when the majority of your workforce is new people every year, there's no chance to build the experience and tribal knowledge needed to create safe and knowledgeable operators.

I've been vehemently anti-union my entire life, believing any good they've done is in the distant past, no longer applicable today. But truckers are one group that could maybe change my mind, on all of that.

I could be mistaken, but believe that part of the problem with truckers is caused by Amazon et.al. and their offering such quick deliveries. That, coupled with the recent increase in online shopping helps put the squeeze on them. Add e-logs to that and there is no practical way to make up time lost in construction zones or other delays.
Plus the above caused the increase in demand for truckers, leading to more green drivers.

A non-commercial driver's license is just too easy to get these days in the USA.
In Germany and Britain, it is akin to getting a pilot's license, and people routinely have to retake the examine to pass: which is expensive.
Since deregulation of the trucking industry, Which Carter did -Motor Carrier Act of 1980 : I've, witnessed, and some how survived, but seen drivers that had no business driving a 50 foot tractor-trailer. Big RVs need a Class C. Or something equivalent to that. Truck drivers need to be held to Class A. Even if they are coming up from Mexico or down from Canada. I've seen so any trucks just shed tires, and not give a damn, if there isn't an inspection/weight station on their route. No one likes government over cite. At least most don't on this site. But, I think this was a failure. I don't trust following any Semi any more. And I've loaded many a trailer with gaylords and a forklift. And no one cared at all about possible shifting loads or internal straps.
