Also need to worry about being street legal, which adds a lot of weight and other restrictions.Diesel fuel also has about 10% more BTUs per gallon than gas, which is one of the reasons diesel powered vehicles get better MPG than gas powered vehicles. Also, the higher compression ratios needed for diesels makes them more efficient.
Once you add the bumpers, EGR, Catalytic, crush zones, safety seats etc. I am sure 300 mpg would be pretty hard to achieve.
