What is the best way to install a grab link onto a chain?

Believe the idea of rod on end of chain is so one can thread the chain under log (or what ever) with out having to dig a hole and push the chain under log by hand and not being able to reach chain from other side.....Kind of like threading a needle...

I think your best bet to add the grab link to your chain is to use the threaded add-on chain link. Should do as you want as far as flipping the grab link end for end, and easy to remove with pliars or wrench.

Or, you could just attach a C-hook to your chain end, and use the grab link loose as needed.

Issue with these may be the spring gate (that keeps chain in) is pretty vulnerable and easily become bent or destroyed and then its useless to keep hook on chain.......

3/8" Imported Hammerlock - 66438I

5/16" Mid-Links - M65

Either style will attach it to the end of your chain and work well.

And think those have way higher load ratings than the threaded add-on links, or other connecting links.

Of these two options, I would pick the Hammerlock. Hopefully a 5/16" hammerlock would fit the 3/8" grab link. I do not think a 5/16" mid link would work for the 3/8" grab link, or 3/8" mid link would work with 5/16" chain. If both the chain and grab link were the same size these would work.

I would not use the 3/8" grab link at all and use a choker hook.

On reviewing all the options presented I think this would be my choice....

The problem I am running into is that the drag link is for a 3/8" chain- it is think, large and heavy.

The "connector"also needs to be also for a 3/8" chain in order for the drag link to move in the inner diameter of the "connector."

But, the "connector pin" is too large in daiameter to fit inside a 5/16" chain link.

So far the only remedy may be to use a 1/2" - 9/16" Grade 8 bolt in place of the larger diameter stock pin?

Not sure if this is safe and how it impacts the load capacity of the outfit as a whole?

Not sure what you are trying to do by putting bigger bolt through already to small chain link... OR maybe I don't understand the opening size of the chain...

I like these connecting/repair links:

They are a bit hard to find but should be available at industrial supply stores. You put the two halves together and then pound the two rivets flat to make a tight connection. They make a cleaner connection than normal shackle type connectors. They look just like a regular chain link once installed.
