What is the difference between independent and live PTO?

The older Fords were like that, and I don't believe that you could get an overrunning clutch 50 years ago. Instead they learned to throw the transmission into neutral when they wanted to stop. Not necessarily the safest scenario, but a lot of things weren't back then.
The 1526 specs are similar to that of my old L275, which was a great tractor.

Safer than getting pushed into the pond and overturning and being trapped under water, or being pushed through the neighbors fence, or running into something else more important like a family member. There were many of those old tractors that went swimming, and some ending in death of the operator.

The independent PTO lets you turn the PTO off or on from the side of the tractor. This can be useful if you're operating stationary PTO attachments like a wood chipper. Many modern independent PTOs are electric over hydraulic- there is an electric switch that operates a solenoid that switches hydraulic pressure to engage the PTO clutch. Often the PTO clutch on an independent PTO can be replaced without splitting the tractor as is needed to replace the clutch between the engine and transmission.

On my Branson the PTO switch has three positions- on, off and "linked" which links the PTO to the three point hitch position. Raise the hitch and the PTO turns off, lower it and it's back on. It's intended to make mowing safer. I don't use it as I want to throttle down to idle before engaging the PTO so the PTO clutch slips less.

Branson must have done the "linked" different for many models. My linked is tied to the foot "clutch" operation on the 8050, I use the link and foot pedal to more gently engage our tedder as just turning the switch on ratchets the slipclutch. Also on my tractor you have to actuate the 3 point once every time you start the tractor for the pto to engage. I have read and heard that on many models it ties into the 3 point operation.

My Kubota M6040 has an independent mechanical PTO. Very handy - separate lever engages/disengages the PTO. I engage at dead idle - the PTO lever allows me to "slip the clutch" for even easier engagement.

Yes, in many respect I prefer a mechanical linkage over the electrical hydraulic because of that.
However I also like our electrical engagement ones doing stationary PTO work as on some of them they have a switch on the rear fender, I can connect the pto shaft prss the start button and work the wagon controls without having to run around the tractor to engage the pto.

What prompted my original question was reading that the gear drive Mahindra in question has a single stage clutch but independent PTO. Hence I was unsure how it worked. My 3301 HST has a lever to a cable to operate the PTO; but I still use the clutch when engaging or disengaging. (I also use it sometimes to stop the tractor... old habits die hard.)

Somewhat off topic, but I had a Shibaura SD1500 grey market tractor that had neither live nor independent PTO. The PTO was run off the transmission. You let the clutch out, and the tractor moved and the PTO engaged simultaneously. All well and good, however ------ One day I was cutting heavy grass with a rotary cutter, pushed the clutch in, and the tractor kept moving forward! The spinning cutter blades were driving the PTO shaft, and powering the transmission from the rear.

I quit mowing for the day and went to buy an overrunning clutch. Not a problem on all older tractors, but it is on plenty of grey market tractors.

Actually, my 1948 Ford 8N works exactly like that!

I think the pto clutch in your M6040 is hyd operated not mechanical.
