I don't know if I have cottonwoods or not. I've never identified one yet for sure. What I thought were cottonwoods are River Birch, and they are all over Texas. Here's a link that will show some of the types of birch trees we have. The peeling bark is very common on them, along with the multiple trunks.

The pictures on that site don't look like any birch I've seen, but then their pictures of cottonwoods don't look like any I've seen either. Attached is a picture of the one next door that I'll estimate at 80' to 90' tall.

In that picture, did you notice the roots on top of the ground? Here's a better picture of that.
