I don't know if I have cottonwoods or not. I've never identified one yet for sure. What I thought were cottonwoods are River Birch, and they are all over Texas. Here's a link that will show some of the types of birch trees we have. The peeling bark is very common on them, along with the multiple trunks.

Attached is a picture of the one next door that I'll estimate at 80' to 90' tall.

In that picture, did you notice the roots on top of the ground? Here's a better picture of that.
