What kind of potatoes do you grow?

Everybody has their own preferences. Yukon Gold is too starchy for me, and russets are just OK. For a staple crop I like Kennebecs or Katahdins.

I also plant a smaller crop of Red Norlands.

(can you tell that I'm from Maine? )

By the end of winter I have about 10 lbs of small 'taters which I plant as soon as I can get on the ground, for an early crop. I then buy seed potatoes so that I'm starting fresh every year, and put these in the ground around the end of June. That way I harvest in September, and they keep well into the winter. It also reduced the chance of potato beetles, although that didn't work out so well for me last year.​

Shouldn't take but a few days to a week, but depends on soil temp, moisture, etc... as you know. If you're curious, you can dig down with your fingers and find one to see how it's doing. They are super hardy and you can just inspect it and plant it right back. I have a bunch or two that came up already on their own from last year even though they've been tilled twice and overwintered.

NOTHING in the garden seems to be growing. Indoor started seedlings. Not dying, but not getting any bigger either. Then some critter dug up the largest of the three tomatoe plants.

Eleswhere, I seem to notice more weeds than grass. Not a promising year.

I should mention, the stuff I can't eat like sunflowers and pumkins seem to be doing the best. lol

Is your spring season weather any different than normal springs?

Last year we had rain and cold so long many farmers never got a crop of corn in and had to switch to beans at the last minute. Some of them barely got them in before they couldn't get crop insurance.

You get old and everything becomes a blurr. Might put the AC unit in the window tomorrow, but it feels like I took it out only yesterday. Weather is so unusual on a regular basis, you don't know what is or isn't normal anymore.

It depends if they were still dormant from storage when you planted them. Even after bringing my seed potatoes out of the root cellar and resting in the warm garage for two weeks, there are very few that have popped up two weeks after planting. The third week is when most of my rows show growth, and that's with very shallow planting.

But like I said elsewhere. Gardening seems to be about rules and a hundred more after that. We just took the taters out of the fruit cellar and put them in the ground. However, it's nothing we didn't do before with reasonable results.

Tiny little taters are a pain to peel too. Maybe good for expensive restaurants. Then you can go to the truckstop on your way home and get a real meal.
