what on earth does electricity cost near you?

In BC we have two rates. First 1332 kWh at 0.069 /kWh. Any power after that amount is charged at 0.1034/kWh.
I have just had my bill for Jan and Feb. Total cost including taxes and other extras is $573.000 - but that is heat, hot water lights everything (5381kWh).
Comparing cost of wood pellets at $5.00 a bag, natural gas, propane or oil, it really isn't too bad.
Eight years ago the electricity rates in BC were the cheapest in Canada. The BC Liberal government got in to power and have screwed up everything they have touched.
I see a lot of much cheaper rates out there and also more expensive rates too.

Dayton Power and Light offers the electric at 6.5 KWH. In Ohio they allow you to pick a provider for the power and then whoever delivers the electric charges you a fee for transmission of the power. Then you get a few more additions. Not a easy bill to figure out. The local furnace guy is pushing electric now because it is equal to propane in cost. Or so says his ad.

He's likely right, propane hasn't been cost competitive with electric for several years.

I just did a bunch of research and calculation on this, comparing heating costs of various fuels. Basically electric wins in most cases. Details here: Unjustified Precision: Propane heat is for suckers... and yes that includes me

But to answer the question that started this thread, in NC Duke Power's standard residential rate is 9.6701 cents per kWh. There are some fixed facility fees but they are relatively minor and about the same as the junk fees charged by propane or oil companies so IMO that's basically a wash.

P.s. I'm a long time lurker who delurked for this thread.

As much as I really hate to say it Jim, the games are just starting..... I have a buddy in the Lower Mainland of BC, and I know smart meters are being deployed there. Once enough hardware is in place, then the new programs start.....

Ontario (govt) has gone from viewing electricity as something operated at cost, to support industry, to viewing it as a Cash Cow. Once you drive industries out of the province, and run up a huge and escalating deficit, you start running out of constructive options fast....

This type of nonsense is just one more motivation for me to move to alternative energy options....

I could not agree with you more. I am looking at selling my place either this year or next, if I can, and then move somewhere else. Don't know where yet but have thought of renting in Elliot Lake for a year or so until we decide what we want to do.
I moved from Ontario to BC in 1983 and at that time things were good. Nowadays it is the complete opposite and we want out as soon as we can.
It sure would be nice to win the Lottery :)

Cheers
Jim

This was in the paper today:

Hydro 'debt retirement charge' has to go | Ontario | News | Toronto Sun

Part of the linked article....

In 1999, after a succession of bad decisions by governments of all stripes, the giant utility was in the red. The DRC was supposed to pay that down. But now it has been 15 years since the DRC kicked in.

Shouldn't it be paid off by now given that every hydro ratepayer in the province is dinged a significant amount of money on every hydro bill?

Well, no. It's not paid off.

In fact, the Liberals quietly added $4 billion to it.

Back in 2009, there was $4 billion added by the government that they didn't reveal until after the 2011 budget, says Tory finance critic Vic Fedeli.

The 2009, 2010 and 2011 financial statements show the debt to be low, but after that the Liberal government added $4 billion to the debt, he says.

"They borrowed against it for non-hydro use, and that's why there's still a debt", Fedeli told me Tuesday.

"They used it as a piggy bank to borrow from. The most evil thing about it was that they didn't disclose that until years later and retroactively put it in the annual report", he said.

The DRC is applied at a rate of 0.7 cents per kilowatt hour.

$4 Billion - hidden for years... Why isn't somebody in jail ?

The Auditor General figured all this out a number of years ago, but I didn't catch up with this gem until hearing it on the radio today. I make a point of NOT reading the Auditor General's Report.... I can't afford a team of cardiologists to be on standby !

We are being financially abused in Ontario. Gerald Butts a university buddy of Justin Trudeau and son of a Liberal Senator. Butts has worked for the World Wild Life Fund and was the Ontario Liberal Party secretary when Dalton McGintie was a new premier.
Anyways even after Green Energy schemes were going bust in Europe and the US. The Ontario Liberals closed the low cost coal plants that all had up to date scrubbers etc. The Liberals signed a contract with Enbridge Gas to pay them even if the natural gas turbines were not running. Signed contracts to pay 80.2 cents per Kwhr for solar power. Signed contracts to pay 16.5 cents per Kwhr iirc. Even though coal and nuclear could generate for 5-11 cents depending on the power plant.
We the rate payer are stuck paying for green power. My last power bill was almost 18 cents per Kwhr.

In the US, all the cloak and dagger smoke and mirrors are done "for the children."

I've come to see they mean the children don't have a say and will have to pay for everything with blood, sweat, and tears, long after the shell gamers have left this life.

These tax scams are especially loathsome when it comes to electrical power. You could cut corners if you had to by ditching your cell phone, cable TV, landline.... but how many people can realistically do w/o electricity ?

Unless you set yourself up totally off-grid, you have no choice in these problem jurisdictions but to pay these extortionist rates.

Either that, or vote with your feet and leave.
