what on earth does electricity cost near you?

Some of you guys are paying a heck of a lot for Electricity. I would think that getting your usage down as much as possible would be a worthwhile monetary goal. Replacing all of your lighting with LED would be an easy and good first effort. With your high costs, it would seem to be more cost effective than some of us that are enjoying much lower electricity costs.

Correct L4N.... the bottom line is all that really matters.

Price went up again today on electricity. You can thank the wide eyed greenie enviro nut Gerald Butts for brain washing Ontario Liberal Party since Dalton Mcguinty . Now he is the Prime Minister's Puppet master enacting carbon credits etc.

1st 1000 KwH fuel charge = $0.030670
1st 1000 KwH non-fuel charge = $0.040670
Above 1000 KwH fuel charge = $0.058700
Above 1000 KwH non-fuel charge = $0.069050
plus we are charged a storm charge, franchise charge, customer and gross receipts tax.
Our November bill for 1579 KwH was $170.23

Our power company got bought out a few years ago basically forming a monopoly of a single company providing power to NC. Not sure it matters since before we could only pick the old company so it had a monopoly in our area. :confused3::rolleyes:

The buyout was controversial to say the least and the CEO that was supposed to lead the combined company was side lined by the other company's CEO. Very strange to say the least.

A couple of months ago the power company sent out a letter showing how much power we used compared to energy efficient and average power using homes in our area. Our home was "energy efficient" in its power usage. Now, this fall and winter has been very warm. Usually by the middle to end of October we start heating the house with the wood stove. We have yet to light a fire! We had day after day of 70+ degree high temps and so far this season only a few days dipping to 30ish. However, at the start of one of the billing periods, it was cool enough for us to run the heat pump to warm up the house. Not cool enough to start a fire but cool enough we needed some heat so our power bill jumped up a bit.

A few days ago, the power company sent us an email saying we were energy pigs and we needed to insulate our house. Really? We have more than the recommended amount of insulation in the attic and we have 2x6 walls with 1 inch rigid insulation giving us a R19 wall. Looking at their graph they sent, it was obvious the most home owners are using propane, gas or wood to heat their houses since energy usage dropped dramatically during the fall and winter. During the summer power usage went up just as dramatically. The power company needs to stop wasting money sending out useless letters that cost the rate payers....

Dan

There you go again, using that L word...... Logic. ;)

It's all just a revenue game....... after many of us across the the province spent to the money to become more efficient (therefore our bills went down), the utilities just got handed various fairy-tale fees to add onto our bills. Net/Net, our bills (and the govts tax revenue) went up.

My last bill averaged 13kwh/day, based on their fictional Total (so, actually a bit lower) - pretty good for this latitude in Winter. Most people here aren't going to beat that by much in a conventional house.

The latest issue here is selling off the provincial utility, as in privatizing. I expect pricing to go up dramatically, as this moves forward.

Just further reinforcing my interest in off-grid....

Don't know how some of you get the usage so low?

All gas appliances?

I average 1000 kwh at my small 1300sq ft house. All led and wood heat.

Another 300-400 kwh at the shop. And am only down there a few days a week

Sounds like a Smokescreen. Either that, or they don't have a clue.

I have natgas heat and hot water. Electric clothes dryer use is very low. Fridge, small freezer, range and microwave are the major loads. Some (C)FL and LED lighting, incandescent remains in areas I prefer. We have central AC, but rarely used the last # of summers. Primary external lighting is on motion-detectors, as is the main internal staircase.

A neighbour with a much bigger house/lifestyle drops close to $500 Canadian/month on electricity - and that's with Natgas heat.

We have a few manufacturers left in this province. Those carbon credits should help take care of that "problem".
