Came across this 2014 Auditor General's report today.

@ May/14, Ontario had spent $2Billion (Bravo) so far on "smart" meters. Of the other things I noted, the fact that Germany had looked at broad-scale implementation of "smart" meters and decided that it didn't make sense stood out.

The report is a long read, and mostly of interest if you like forensic accounting, or want a guide to large-scale vanity projects and/or greenwashing taxes.

N.B. Ontario taxpayers - get a full workup/clearance from a top cardiologist, before starting into this report.

I'm not gonna look at it. I don't need a heart attack. It is bad enough I see my Hydro bill.
Funny, I replaced all the lights in the house with LEDs and still my bill went up. It should have come down. :(

My usage dropped noticeably 2 years ago when I went LED and it was reflected on the statement...

The dollar amount is now close to what it was then.

I've added a lot of LED, has not been noticable on my bill.

In moms home of 50 years she had two dining room table over head track lamps... they both had 250w "Reader" light bulbs because she started having vision issues 10 years back.

I exchanged the 250 for CREE par lamps and she likes them... so 500W now 27W

Her Bedroom had three 100 W bulbs and now three 13.5 CREE LED

Everywhere in the house I swapped out the 100W for 13.5 or less...

The Kitchen had three 100W bulbs and put in a light cloud with two 32W T8 bulbs and over the sink got rid of the three 100W with more CREE LED.

The change was most dramatic.

Her home was built in 1958 and three bulb fixtures were the norm everywhere... with even a four bulb in the rumpus room.

After wiping out virtually all of the heavy industry in this province, then the overlords realized that somebody still had to provide the cashflow...... the arithmetic is pretty simple...... the same overhead divided by less kwh consumption meant that kwh cost had to go up...... even if zero green projects had been funded here, this factor alone drives a significant increase.

Replacing cfl's or incandescent?

My old house was all CFL for the last 6 years. Well before leds were affordable. Even after they became affordable, it wasn't worth replacing all of them as enerfy difference/savings was nil.

New house was all incandescent. I replaced all 40 or so with LED's. Nothing to compare to as that was one of the first things I did.

If going from CFL>Led.... Ok don't imagine there would be much difference in a bill.

Goi g from incandescent to led....should be a difference. Bout 50w per bulb savings. If you average 5 bulbs for 5 hrs a day should be about a 40kwh/month difference. And 5 bulbs for 5 hrs is on the low side IMO. Between the kitchen, LR, and DR, it's not uncommon to have those 13 bulbs on for a solid 5 hours in the evening.but then again, with LEDs I don't worry too much about turning out lights everytime I leave a room

Incandescent to LED. I've prioritized the ones used the most. In basement fluorescent to LED, slso garage. Have converted 20 bulbs in ceiling fans. Outdoor lights mostly LED.

As noted, thy don't make a huge difference. It's not like it will cut your bill in half or anything. But realistically 50-100kwh for about average usage. But my bill varies by as much as 100-200 kwm month to month. Just depends on how much time I am at home vs shop, how often the kids get baths vs showers, how often we dine out vs est in, etc.

So a bill that ranges anywhere from 1000-1300kwh like mine, shedding 50 or 60 kwh off really wouldn't jump out as a noticable difference.

In the winter time the incandescent lamp is not a total loss. The lamp's waste heat adds some warmth to the home.
