My AC clutch is dropping out, even though it has current to the wire entering the compressor.
Happens most often after has been working fine for a while. Likely getting hotter, although engine temp is fine.
Some times it will cycle back on for a little bit, then back off.
We put an led lite in the cab, attached to the clutch power wire (near compressor entry), so we can see when it cycles off & on, from the pressure switch, ETC. AC works great for a little while, then gets hot in a hurry when the clutch drops out.
This happened today while the led lite was on. We were able to check wire at compressor entry point with meter. 13.5 volts but clutch not latched.
I know nothing about compressor clutches.

I would think the clutch coil is going bad.

Assume you've checked the freon pressure.
Mr Newbury, he states the clutch falls out, with the presents of voltage on it. Don’t that pretty much prove all other things are there? Just asking

Mike, I was of the opinion that the coil would act similar to a light bulb. Either good or bad. We later found that the coil should check between 3.0 & 3.4 Ohms. Ours checked 1.5 Ohms. I presume this means the coil is weak (or maybe shorted), so I guess you may be sending me the right direction.

Thanks

It would have a low pressure cutoff switch that takes out the compressor clutch when refrigerant charge is low. That's why it is cycling. It is low in freon.

I believe if this were the case, there would be no voltage to the clutch. We have 13.5 volts to clutch while it is not running.

Sounds as if AC clutch coil is heating up & failing or clutch coil is losing it's ground(earth) connection

If the fuse popped, the clutch coil is on its way out as the windings are compromised. Instead the compressor is fine and then at high rpm the clutch lets go even though its energized. That is classic of the clutch gap out of spec.... (too wide). Take a paper business card (not a credit card) and swipe it in the gap. It should be snug. If not, there are 1 or 2 shims behind the clutch. Take out a shim and replace. Hopefully you have access without removing the compressor

Let me just toss this out there. If a good clutch coil has twice the resistance as the OP's it is possible that part of the winding is shorted out. That would be like removing half the windings. That being the case, the clutch would pull with much less force than if it had the complete winding working.
