What size auger?

New to the forum, been lurking about but this is my first post. I am purchasing a Leinbach 7200 PHD. What size auger is recommended? The choices are 4, 6, 9 or 12 inches. I have a Kubota L4240 and will be digging holes to set blackberry plants, and eventually building a fence. Any advice is welcomed!!

9 inch should cover both applications your looking to perform.

I have a Leinbach 7300 and I bought the complete kit with a 6, 9 and 12. If you search Ebay there is a guy selling them with all 3 augers and the difference is so little that you would be crazy not to buy all 3 auger sizes. I have not used the 6" but I have used the 9" and 12" frequently.

The 12" gives you a lot of wiggle room when setting fence posts to make adjustments. My fence posts primarily are 6 x 6 pressure treated so using the 12" in helpful. I have also used the 9" for 4 x 4 posts.

For putting in plants, my feeling is bigger is better. I have the 12" and I like it. Used it for Blueberry, apple trees and several other trees. Worked well for the outhouse, too.

Where are you getting your blackberries? The ones I got mail ordered do not take a very wide or deep hole. Unless you are planting a lot of them you might find using a 3 pt auger to be a hassle.

For fencing it will largely be based on the size of your post and if you pour concrete or not around the post. (A whole topic by itself). I would be inclined to get 12 inch auger.

I have a 6", 9", and 12" auger for my PHD and I've used them all at one time or another - planting trees, fence posts, deck footings/piers, etc. The size(s) you need all depends on what you're going to do the most often. I find I use the 9" most, followed by the 6" then the 12". YMMV.

I have a 6" and a 9". My experience with the 6" is the vertical alignment. It has to be nearly perfect if you are setting posts, there is no room for adjustment in a 6" hole. The 9" is the auger of choice for me.

Did you say you are planting blackberries? Ivy and blackberries are the two most invasive plants in the Pacific NW where I live. Hopefully they are a different strain that is more easily controlled. Or maybe your wife makes a great pie. I suppose some folks grow them commercially, but around here we shudder at the thought.

I'll settle for pumpkin pie.

It's obvious that you use and are happy with the Leinbach 7300. I see that Leinbach offers/recomends a 7200 for compact tractors. Would you recomend that to the 7300? They say the 7200 is designed with a narrow hitch. I have a 7510
