Mowing What size brush hog can I use?

The standard answer is generally 5 PTO HP per foot of cutter width; so a 6' rotary cutter would match your 31 PTO HP pretty well. The dealer can probably also make a recommendation. It also somewhat depends on what you'll be cutting. Mowing heavier/ thicker vegetation will require a smaller cutter; Mowing lighter vegetation a bigger cutter could be used.

So using this method, my 2516 Shuttle(with 21.5 pto hp) should handle a 4ft brush hog just fine...I hope. Can anyone steer me to a particular well built brand?

The Bush Hog squealer series is a good medium range cutter. I've had the SQ60, (a 5' cutter), for seven years, and it seems to be the perfect match for my Mahindra 2615 which has 21.1 hp at the PTO.

Bush Hog is a very reputable cutter. You probably would be fine with an SQ series. I am running a 286 with 45hp @ pto and it has gone through some very dense, woody stuff. Just be careful if buying used. Make the seller prove it works, used cutters can be a headache and expensive in the long run. Good luck

Thanks for all the replies, not sure what brand I'm leaning towards, but I will be going with the 4ft size!

I have a 5' Bush Hog model brush cutter. If I use it on my Kubota L235 (21 HP pto) it has a hard time in thick grass, weeds, and brush.I have had the Bush Hog for years, plus a 6' Bush Hog finish mower, great mowers. My Kubota can finish mow well with the 6' mower but not the brush cutter in over grown fields. I use my 3316 for brush mowing.

Is there some formula for Bush hog size? My 19 HP Bolens g192 will pull my 4' pretty good. I use it on my Mahindra 3510 but I feel like I could use more. 5ft, 6ft or larger. I want to use it next year for cutting grass for hay bales.

I've often heard people recommend 5 PTO hp per foot of cut.
