What size gooseneck trailer?

/ What size gooseneck trailer? #41
Its an auto and 4X4 but i'm not sure what transmission it has in it, I dont believe its the same trans as was in my 1998 Z71 though. I interpreted the Motor Trend article to mean that all 2500 HD's had the Allison trans. But that may just be wishful thinking, Diamondpilot may be 100% correct. Im not sure how to look and tell. It does have a working trans. temp gauge in the dash. Maybe someone knows what part code the Allison is and i can look it up on the Service parts id sticker on the glove box?

sd455dan it seems awfully low geared to me but again thats coming from a 1/2 ton Z71 with a 3.73.

I was referring to the transmissions first gear, a 2.48 is relatively high in comparison to say a 6.00+ (granny) 1st gear.
Your rear axle gear (4.11) is the gear you want, to maximize your towing capability.. Also the fact that your truck is so light is also a good thing, it means there is more of what is left of the 9200lbs. gvwr that can be placed on the pin of your goose neck... also after re reading one of your posts that you already have the factory temp gauge that makes me think your truck may also have the extra cooler for the transmission already installed -I would look and see...

There is no way its that light. I had a 05 crew cab long bed Dmax. It was 7300#.

Stop speculating and go to a truck stop and weigh it with you in it and at least a 1/2 tank of gas. Its a good $5 spent. Then you will know for sure.

cab and chassis maybee?

Even at that 4 of us lifted off a Chevy bed on a 1500 to do some fuel and brake line work. Not much difference. I bet it was not 600#. It was my neighbor, his wife, me, and my misses.

How many more times ?
What Diamondpilot (Chris) keeps saying.
Stop speculating, spend a few (VERY few) bux and get the darned thing WEIGHED !
Since weighing mine as a chassis cab when it was "NEW AND NAKED" I have added an aluminum flat bed, also an underbed tool box and chucked a spare wheel on it.
Not much here, not much there, though the tools IN the box probably add up to a bit and altogether it is something significant.
Ya need to know ALL the weight; people, gas, tools, spare wheel, jack, whatever all else - toll quarters in the center console, etc. (-:

BTW, 3 of us (none of us "Beefy") cut a police paddy wagon box off a 1 ton and lifted it - I was already OLD at that time and it certainly outweighed a pick-up tin bed.

Took Diamondpilots advice and weighed it today. 6200 lbs on the dot. Thats counting me, tool box, step bars, grill guard and right at 17-18 gallons of gas.

So here are the numbers. Your max GCWR is 16,000#. Your max GVWR is 9,200# We now know your truck weighs 6,200#

So lets look at the GVWR. 9,200# minus the 6,200# the truck weighs leaves you a honest 3,000# of payload. That's good for a 3/4 ton truck.

Now lets look at the GCWR. 16,000# minus the 6,200# your truck weighs leaves you with a actual tow rating of 9,800#. Not very good.

You need more truck!

Are you sure your tractor weighs what you thought, what brand and model ,tires filled, loader?? just to be sure it is that heavy, I'm guessing at least 75 HP ag 4x4 tractor and loader??

I'm not sure exactly what it will weigh, I haven't actually bought it yet but the one I've been thinking about getting is a heavy brute. 5085M John Deere with ROPS. Its 70 pto hp and 4x4. The brochure says its 7600 lbs without loader or filled tires. It will have the 19.5L - 24 rear tires and im not sure how much fluid they will hold but I was just guessing 300-400 lbs for each tire and then say 1600 lb for the loader/bucket and i'd be at 10K. Its the heaviest one i've looked so far by at least 1000 lbs.

Wow- that's similar to what I was considering at one time Only your looking at new -a JD 5420 with the Hd Quick attach loader, I'm sure those #s are dead on and the fluid (beet juice?) not real sure either but probably every bit of that , but guessing the loader weight sounds about right to, and not sure if that's a structural, not operational weight (diesel, 8+ gallons of hydraulic fluid, engine oil) The tractor /loader could be heavier and then if you're like me and you want to brush cut a field and you leave it on the tractor depending on how heavy duty and width or even a tiller add another 1200lbs. Sounds like Diamond Pilot is right about needing more truck.
In your GMs 6.0 favor- the Diesel, Allison equipped 2500 HD truck is only rated for 1500lbs. more when a standard pull behind trailer is used, when switched to a gooseneck or 5th wheel it it jumps jumps up to 15,900 towing capacity, I still wonder if there is a 5th wheel rating for your 6.0 equipped truck, I'm sure it isn't 15,900 but 13,500 would not surprise me. One other thing The 2001 2500 HD diesel Allison trucks should have a sticker that states a GCWR of 22-23,000 lbs, not 18-19,000lbs. I would like to see that sticker.. Since you haven't purchased the tractor yet the weight question is moot .but if you do buy that model, a heavier duty truck would be the best option- just my 02 cents You will want to carry the three point implements on the tractor...

No matter what his tow rating is 9800# now. That is the problem with gas HD trucks. Many times the 1/2 tons of the same brand can tow slightly more but have less payload.

Like I said, you need more truck or less tractor.
