I have 3 brothers and 2 of us have strong accents and 2 of us don't.
My mother's side of the family is Cajun, the name is Boudreaux. My dad is from the midwest but has been down there since his NAVY days so he's now a local.
What's fascinating is how many accents the general area of New Orleans has. A good ear can identify most.
When my mom was little, the schools in New Orleans did not allow French to be spoken, period.
When I was in elementary school they allowed some of us to take French but it was not popular with the parents because the teacher was from Belgium. "Dat ain't French, sha!"
Here is a primer for some of the dialects in New Orleans that was filmed in 1983, my Junior year of HS.
