What the heck is this?

While changing the oil and dislodging sticks from my L5030, I noticed this. Should it look like that?

It is back from the drain plugs in the center of the tractor.

Man that thing sure is exposed. Does it need to be replaced, I checked and it still "jiggles"?

If it still jiggles, I wouldn't mess with it, if it falls out you can get a cotter key about the same size diameter and spread it apart a little then squeeze it together and stick it in the hole, the tension will hold it in for you. A lot of tractors have cotter keys in that hole.

There's one of those that looks in about the same condition on my tractor also. Thanks a lot guys, now, every time I do an oil change, modesty will require that I avert my eyes.

It is called a Split pin Plug and is for draining water out of the clutch housing. You are supposed to push in the pin to drain the water. Being bent yours may not work correctly.

It is around $8 to replace.

Thanks, I will pick one up the next time I go by the Kubota dealer. That is really a poor design or so it seems to me, but I suppose that is a moot point.

Will condensation collect in there or is it like ATV/RUV for when it is submerged?

Before going out and buying a new one...why don't you just bend that one straight with a pair of pliers so it can push in and out again? That's what I did. You can also take off the nut the pin goes through for further examination.

I also think it was a afterthought in design to save the buyer from another maintence check. I guess when mine finally breaks off, I will solder the little hole shut and just lightly tighten the large nut. Then occasionally take the nut off to check/drain for water. Or do what Milkman suggested, (probably the better choice of the two).

I thought about that after posting and will probably just seal it off and drain it at each maintenance as the way I use my tractor I will just bend anything I put in there.

My wife and I spent a couple of hours yesterday surgically removing a large stob from between my hydraulic lines and frame. We has to cut it in three places and then rotate it out.

Since I go in the woods to do my fire wood, I had a skid plate made to protect everything under the tractor, including oil filters, hydrolic lines and the split pin plug.

Quebeker...We have similar tractors...mine's an L3830. I have been thinking of doing that.

A few questions...what metal thickness is the plate, what attachment points did the installer use? I would sure like to see some pics. Maybe starting another post, (so we don't hijack Triple's post), if you feel like showing some. I know there's a lot of interest in such with our Kubotas. I know JD has a pan package add on for some of their tractors, but not Kubota, (that I know of). I have torn off the hyd filter and done other damage from limbs. Not fun. And it's not fun being paranoid all the time with limbs around.

There's probably a cone-shaped taper on the top of the pin, when you push it up it allows any moisture to drain out. I'm wondering what would happen if the pin was removed altogether? Unless you drive through deep water, I can't see anything getting up inside.. my theory is like drum brakes on ATV's, you either make it impossible for water to get in (which is in itself impossible), or you make it easy for water to get in, and then out..

I have a similar pin, unbent, on L5030. I have pushed it up and down on occasion...never had any moisture. Manual says that is the thing to do.
