Buying Advice What to buy and what's in the HP numbers?

It could be . I just pulled the weights from tractor data.com and they have some mistakes scattered around in their data.

Happens to all of us ... I think the weight you grabbed was the DK45 (not se)... It was an older model and ancestor to the DK55

Speaking of weight, is there a significant bonus to having Industrial tires? I prefer Ag for being in the woods in my area, but i have read
that they (Ind) are superior for doing loader work as the sidewalls have more strength.
Anyone care to chime in on the pros and cons of either style?

I have had both over the years and there are a lot of factors involved. If you have turf the industrials don't cleat as badly as the AGs. For traction the AGs generally fair better. If you are moving a lot of weight with the loader I prefer the R4's for the sidewall strength and larger footprint, particularly with a rock and debris bucket as it is heavy and when loaded with rocks very heavy. I also prefer the R4's for mucking out old ponds as they don't sink as quickly as the Ag's. Also, i prefer them for mowing. For plowing there is no comparison the Ag's are better. It really depends upon what you are doing with the tractor most of the time. I also prefer the R4's for working on a gravel road.

 Plowing (snow) and using the bushcutter make up the most of my hrs in the seat. our area is has a lot of gravel and is sparse on the topsoil, so digging into the soil is limited at best. some of the fields are boggy but that's not a concern.
I will take a closer look at this when it comes to final decision time.

I have always like JD but got the impression they were out of my price range.

Is there a reason the rear tires on the JD look undersized?

I will put a blank sheet in front of me and piece together my wants/needs again. I am sure the info i got today will bring a lot of insight to my list.

can you give more detail on your front blade?
brand, float, etc.
I haven't seen one that had the chain like a truck plow and certainly not that tall.
I have no FEL experience, so while understanding what "float" is, I haven't seen it in operation.

Mine is a converted truck plow(Curtis) with a chain lift(plow). It is so high because I was going to multi purpose
the adapter plate;I was going to use it for a boom pole in addition to a snow plow.
I have the ability to weld so I fabricated my own.
Basically the plow can float because it has a pivot point and is not fixed to the adapter plate, not to be confused with the FEL float which puts all the weight of the FEL down.So I "float" the plow but not the FEL.I still use the FEL to raise and lower the plow.

The 5*** series comes in four different horsepower variations. Each has a different rear tire size matched to the torque being applied to the ground. As far as I can tell mine are a good match to the power available. It would take some time in big fields with different soils and moisture contents to know more about it.
As to cost my 5045E with 553 loader and 72 inch rotary cutter was just under $30 K and at zero percent interest.
Don't assume JD costs more until you actually get a price on a real machine.

And that is where the good times stop. In Canada we get shafted on prices. On EVERYTHING.

I recently received a "first" price on the
1736 cab/loader. $39,000.00
1754 cab/loader. $47,800.00
That's a country mile .... um Kilometre away from what you just posted for a bigger tractor with a bush cutter.

Example: I am involved in the world of audio. Last summer I got a microphone through Sweetwater for $349.00 The same one at our national chain is online for $548.

I will see if I can price the comparable tractor at the JD dealer and report my findings.

Well those are the real numbers and I'll show you the loan papers if you would like. and that was two and a half years ago and there is "very low inflation" so it shouldn't be that far off. I've seen my tractor used ,with loader without the cutter and 300+/- hours on it for $25,000 USD. but usually in Texas or somewhere a long shipping distance away. But on the other hand this class JD is assembled in Pune India so the difference between any point in the USA and any point in Canada is moot.
It might well come down to which of the local dealers does honest work for a fair price. Without that any deal on first purchase will come back to haunt you.

i am not disputing your numbers. My point is, in Canada, we pay through the nose for everything, so things are not always within reach.
while a 45-50 HP might be ideal for me, it may cost 50 grand and more for implements. That is why i am asking so many questions and trying to research my choices. Thats a lot of cash for a casual user to fork over. I value your input and responses. :)
