It is looking like I should investigate this more thoroughly. Beyond local dealer service, 10k or more is hard to ignore when it comes to what Americans are paying vs Canadians. Exchange rates wouldn't stand in the way of that incentive.

I will read up on this tonight.... There is another storm blowing through so I must pack up and head home from work, plug in the 35 and play in the diesel fumes.
thanks for the link!

Not direct substantive numbers, but I grew up with diesel engines that were larger and really low rpm engines with massive torque and they sipped fuel for what they were. As tractor manufacturing matured the move to lighter and higher rpm engines and turbochargers seemed to me to use more fuel. This was throughout the range from small tractors to the massive 8WD ones. I didn't work any on the newer ones, and have not followed that end of it. The old ones like earlier gasoline engines were straightforward and fix under the tree machines. The current day ones are really more reliable for the most part in my experience both diesel and gasoline but exponentially more complex. Ethanol in fuel is another matter entirely though. I digress. I do nothing more than routine maintenance on any of my tools, aka, toys anymore.

I got curious and played around in John Deere's website " build your own". My tractor today with loader etc and without the rotary cutter msrps at $32,400 and a 4*** series with cab and loader runs well over $40k The cab lists at $8600 The four wheel drive axle was $5500 so you could get a 5045D 2wd base machine for less then $20,000
Here is the link to USA build your own. There probably is a Canadian version and you could look back and forth to compare apples to apples.

Those are some valid points. One thing I didn't consider is the effect that a Turbo would have on fuel usage. Are there numbers to support the differences? I will do a search but in case you know on the top of your head, I'll ask.
Using an FE35, you can't get much more basic, and that simplification has been rock solid in terms of maintenance and troubleshooting issues.
The age of emissions and computer controlled this and that has taken the backyard mechanic out to sea and offered no return passage.
I will look at the chassis choices you mention and see what comes of it.

I know for fact that the backyard mechanic is alive and well. He/She now just caries a laptop computer along with them and they cost a good bit more than they used to.

I think you would find with a snow-blower the HST would work better than a geared tractor.Infinate speed control. With a cab/air conditioning and brush-hogging a little more HP will make life easier. We have two Kubota's and have had good luck with them;my choice would be the L4760 for your uses.
Dealer support is worth a whole lot to me.

I agree with the first sentence. The OP said he has three driveways to clear. My father has been using a 1980s vintage geared and open cab JD to clear his 300' driveway with a FEL for years and I've been trying to convince him to get a new JD with HST, a blower, and a cab because it would be so much faster, cleaner, warmer, and easier on his knees.
