What to charge for tilling?

If he's truly a friend, tell him, as others have already suggested, to take care of the weeds. He can over seed now and after the seeds sprout next spring, use a weed killer to kill any weeds. If he doesn't over seed, he can go with a pre-emergent in the spring. If he's dead set on killing what he has now, suggest to him to just Roundup his lawn then use a slit seeder. The reason for this is to avoid turning up weed seeds that are in the soil that tilling will being up. If he's dead set on tilling, just have him cover your cost and do it when you have free time.

I've got a friend that allows me to borrow his equipment when he's not using it. He's a landscaper so he's equipment is almost always on a job site. One time when I borrowed his skid steer, I got a blow out on the trailer getting it back to him. I offered to pay for replacement and a additional spare, but he declined. Even after that fiasco and him not taking anything from me, he's offered to install a retaining wall for me. Now that's a true friend.

Being he has pretty much everything, I don't have much to offer him, but I know if he needs anything and I can help, I will. The only things I've ever done for him was help him work on his Jeep and lent him a small generator for when he and his GF go camping...

So the question is.. Are you a true friend or are you just aquiantances? If you consider him a true friend, do what you can without worrying about making money from him. If he's more of an aquiantance, well, do whatever you want...

Definately a tough situation...working with family and friends.

My brother in law owns a tree service. Whenever I need his services he drags his equipment to my property and works all day long (if necessary) at no charge. I have never allowed him to work for free even thought that's his price. I always fuel his equipment and offer to help with maintenance. I also usually bar-b-que for his family.

My point is this - if you care about somebody then DON'T take advantage of them. Respect them and they will respect you.

Just my opinion.
