What to to about small trees

just push them over with the fell. It is really easy (see video in link). On smaller trees you have to be lower with the bucket than I am in this video. You don't want to break the tree without getting the roots (as others have mentioned). But I've found this method works and is very fast on any small tree. I've done this with cedars and a variety of hardwoods up to about 1 foot in diameter at the base and 60 feet tall. If the tree is only 3 or so inches in diameter I might start with the bucket about 18 inches from the ground and move it up if needed so that I don't break the trunk off without getting the roots.

That method works pretty well for us, but we usually don't push anything over that big.

Very nice FOPS.

If your objectives are just cleared pasture, brush mowing 4 to 5 inches high, I would not bother to pull the trees and stumps. Pulling the stumps will leave a mess and another big job of leveling the ground again. Just cut the trees close to ground and mow. You have to mow anyway. No need to use chemicals if you can drive your mower over the stump.

Not sure your location. In the south, those little stumps will degrade in 36 months and you will be able to mow lower. The brush hog will actually vaporize those little stumps after the third summer.

I built this thing about 10 years ago and it worked so well on the back of my 1720 that I built a larger one to go on the front of my 1845 Case SS this year. Pulls the trees up roots and all.

About 40 plus years ago dad and i cleared some 30 acres of small trees and brush, these ranged from 1" to 6" across the stump. We brushhoged what we could and cut the rest at ground level with a chainsaw, stacked them to burn at a later time. While this process was going on a very old man stopped by and told us we were going about this all wrong, so dad listened. The man said cut them in a month that has an "R" in it. Preferability starting the 2nd week of September and going thru January, he said if you do it this way you will get almost no suckers growing back and the stumps rot out quickly! He also said February, March and April do not work! for some strange reason. We followed his suggestion and it really worked GREAT! Now when i need to get rid of brush i follow those instructions. Sounds strange but it works up here for us and theres very little ground disturbance . . .Good luck . . .John
