Thanks. I'll keep checking craigs list for a stick welder. Right now I'm using two sawhorse brackets with 2x4's in them and a 2x4 cross beam which is holding 3 of the 500 3/8" brinell plates. It works well but is sort of large to bring to the range each time. Also, the lead and jackets of the bullets really chew up the 2x4 legs. Its easy to cut your hand if you aren't careful. I've been scraping the lead bits out but I still think the rebar stand would work better. It will be low to the ground so the plate is only several inches up. I think it will work and I get to play with a welder.

Now if I shoot it with my AR50 I know it probably won't hold. :)

If I was welding rebar I would use O/A. Can do #3 to #5 in one pass if I bevel each end half way through and use mild steel 1/8" rod. For what you are doing it is not technical or structural to any extent. Any junk alloy w/the mild steel will mix and give a passable weld. With arc by the time I set up, get the leads hooked up, get rod out of the oven, hood on, and tack up, and do two or three passes i would have 4-5 O/A welds done as that rig is always ready by my bench. #4 tip is always on the torch.

he is shooting at ar500 steel. I shoot at hardox 450 and my 30.06 308 7.62x54r wont even dent this steel at 100 yards. My 223 will do a little bit of surface damage. My buddy has a 270wsm that will punch a hole though 3/8 hardox. Now if he is using 500 i doubt my 223 will do any damage. If he stepped up to 1/2 only thing going to hurt it is maybe 300 win mag, or .338 lupa mag or 50bmg will go straight though.

I believe that phosphorous is the only thing regulated in rebar unless it is weld spec rebar. I want to throw up when I see rebar bent into hooks for lifting. It is cheap for a reason...

I always took a second look before going up a ladder that was made with rebar rungs.

Man you ain't joking, I cannot understand why they do that. Had a safety guy tell me it was safer cause you won't slip. It was the best choice! Welcome to the world of the lowest bidder in the country that killed the Twinkie. :( on a positive note rebar is still great for concrete

I've built hundreds of ladders, but can't remember building any that had rebar for rungs. But who knows, I've built so much crap in my life It's beginning to be all a blur now!
