... Nope I am all done with tubular magazine .22's, wouldn't recommend one to anyone now a days.

Ive never seen the issues you mention but I do not doubt they occur...

I have two tubular feed .22's

one a Mod. 1898 Winchester .22 short (only) octagon barrel "gallery gun"...my grandfather won this rifle on a .25 cent punch-board... this rifle is amazingly accurate...

the other one I have is Remingtom 550 it is a semi-auto and will take any .22 rimfire ammo...short, long, long rifle (even mixed in mag)...very fun to shoot...

Well, if you are out plinking by your self and are carefull, of course they can be fun, but in a situation where you are showing new shooters gun handling as well as marksmanship, and any competitive situation, they really don't work well. It is not that I didn't grow up with tubular mag .22 rifles, becauas that is what we had, from lever action to semi auto to pump., but they make me wince when I see people manipulate them after I have been through Range Officer training.

The old Nylon 66 and the little Browning .22 auto are not as bad, because the tubular follower and loading path is from the rear/side of the stock, and the barell is pointed at the ground and your hand is no where near the muzzle. But neither one of those is going to be available for $200 or less.

The old Nylon 66 ...
I forgot I have one of those too so that makes three...

it seems the brown ones fetch a little more than the black ones from what I've seen at shows...mine is black...

Try a Remington 597. There are just about as many options for it as a 10/22. But they aren't near the price. I think I paid about $180 last summer for mine. Put 200 rounds through it before you try to hunt with it. Mine was all over till about then and now is very accurate. Had an older guy tell me that about all rifles he said that was the break in period.

hard to beat a ruger 10/22

just stick with the oe rotary mag.. some of the non oe mags jamb bad... can get the ruger in wood or poly, and in take down mods too.

another would be a marlin tube feeder..

Butler creeks work really well. and Believe it or not, the all plastic Eagle mags work well. Just don't buy a RamLine for sure. But of course the 10 round original mags are flawless, and flush fitting.

I have the same opinion as others, the good ole Rugar 10/22. I have had mine for about 20 years now & paid $129.99 for the SS Bull barrel model on sale... Must have gone thru 5000 rounds on it by now & rarely clean it more than a few times a year. It sets in the barn with Rotary Mag 2/3 full ready for woodchuck to pop it's head out. I have some of the 50 & 25 round Eagle plastic mags they work well but means ya can really burn thru the ammo & takes a while to re-load em all lol. I got a deal when I bought the guns (couple Browning Buck Marks IIs (two of them) and the 10/22 with 5 extra banana mags & an extra rotary. Christmas Bonus was 500 bucks & had enough cash for 3 or 4 bricks of ammo. :D I think that was 93 or 94... I went back & bought a Lama .380 and a 9mm Rugar Blackhawk which remain loaded for personal/home defense.

I have an old Remington 22 bolt action clip fed 22 rifle that was my dad's. Been looking for something to replace it since I don't think it should be shot any more. Thought's on a replacement? Probably a semi auto but others would be considered. Just for plinking around, I already have a S&W M&P 22 pistol that I absolutely love. I may put a scope on it but not sure.

Thanks

That wouldn't happen to be a Remington 581, would it? Just curious.
